Got a coolant hose chafing? Here's a quick and easy way to halt it before it springs a leak and leaves you stranded.

I carry a caulk gun with polyurethane. Anywhere something is touching or rubbing against something it shouldn't i spread it apart to about a 1/4 inch gap and put a small blob of polyurethane between the two. Let it dry and never again the two shall meet.

Don't be tempted to use silicone. Silicone tears, doesn't stretch much and doesn't have near the tenacity of poly.

I had my high pressure line to the power steering pump pop on me while backing into a dock yesterday. It was bundled together with other lines and the friction worked it's way through causing it to burst. The largest one it was rubbing against is also dug up pretty good.

After looking through all the lines on both sides of the engine I see some more spots on other hoses that are suspect. I'd like to replace them all but I don't want them to get damaged like the current ones are from abrasion. I've looked at several options for abrasion protection but none seem like the "best" option.

So what do you guys use for hydraulic hose abrasion protection on your trucks?

Take a heater hose, split it and cover the line in question. Hold it in place with zip ties.

I thought about doing something like that but I didn't think it would stand the test of time as far as abrasion goes. Maybe I could wrap the heater hose with sheet metal.

Tie them together tight. If they can't move, they can't wear.

    JimmyWells Thanks this.

No no. Just heater hose and keep any eye on it. You'll see.

They were all bound and bolted together with the factory clamps. Didn't look like they could move to me at all. I even tugged on them and they didn't budge. They still vibrated through though.

Heater hose is that good? If so, I'll give it a try. Just doesn't seem THAT strong to me.
