There was a guy I met when I first started he took the back seat out along with the passenger seat and made himslef a bedframe on the right ran lengthwise and it measured legal. I think he did some type of arrangement with existing seatbelt to make it completely legal. He said he still logged 10 off duty anyway.

ya I hard about him. for me anyways I look at a hotel bill as a business expense, but Ive always got the wife along so any kind of pickup gets small fast

I look at motels the same way, as a business expense. I'd rather pay for a motel room than try to sleep in the truck. I can picture how uncomfortable that would be as I'm 6' tall and the truck seat isn't, plus (being female)
I want the convenience of a bathroom at night that I don't have to cross a dark parking lot to get to, a door with a good lock, and a place to make myself some coffee and supper even if it is microwaved.
There's no way I'm going to try to camp out in my truck, freeze or fry depending on the weather, and worry all night about the 2 legged critters wandering around with only a window between me and the outside. -

Well you wouldn't catch this old gal in a miniskirt, I'm a jeans and boots type but glad you had a nice experience just the same.
Being ex-cop and all, I have my ways of protecting/defending myself but why ask for trouble, I just keep to myself, disappear into a motel room at night and stay inside until I'm ready to leave in the morning. I keep it all very low key and don't put myself in situations that might go bad. I'm pretty sure my hubby wants me home in one piece and without a bunch of drama.
