Im a Canadian driver. Let me start by saying I'm aware that I can drive up to 13 hours in a 14 hour period and that I then need to take 10 hours off/sleeper. My question is if I have a short day how will my hours work out. Let me give an example:

I start my day at 12 noon and I drive for 3 hours and I'm on duty for 1 hour for a total of 4 hours on duty including driving. Thats all dispatch has for me today so i take 10 + hours in the bunk and some off duty time because I don't have to come on duty again until 8 am the next morning to reload.

My question is how many hours do I have available to drive when I start at 8am. Do I have my 14 hour day available or do I only have 10 hours available because I already used 4 hours the previous day.

You have your full 13 driving and 1 hour on duty the next day.

Ok so I don't have to worry about the 24 hour day? The rules always explain a 14 hour on duty period and 10 hours off totaling a 24 hour day. As long as I take 10 hours off I can reset my 14 hour day? Is that right?

You can drive 13 hours in a 16 hours period in Canada, well in Ontario .
In USA you can drive 11 hours in 14 hours period.

Right but if I start my day at 12 noon and work for 4 hours and then take 10 hours sleeper and am off until 8 am the next morning that's not a 24 hour day (at 12 noon it would be a 24 hour period) so that's whats confusing me. I want to start at 8am the next morning, can I do that and will I have 14 hours available of on duty time (13 driving) at that time?

You need 24 hours off only if you've been working 14 days , consecutive does'tmattet how many hours/ day ;the 15th day you deed 24 hours consecutive hours off. Even if you have hours according with 70hous/ 7 days rule.

I guess my question isn't clear maybe?

Can I drive 4 hours and take 10 hours in the sleeper and then drive for 13 hours? I think the answer is no right?

If I start my day at 12 noon one day (regardless of how many hours I'm on duty), isn't the earliest I can start my day the following day @ 12 noon (unless I'm using a split sleeper of course). Am I way out to lunch here?

Sure you can, if. ... you have this 13 hours, I mean if in the last 7 days you have 57 hours on duty, because you can work 70 jours (driving plus on duty not driving) in 7 days, and in USA is way worst, you have 70 in 8 days .In your example if you work until 4 pm, after 10 hours break , this is going to be 2 am, next day you can start again another 16 hours window , solo you can drive 13 hours +1 hour of on duty not driving.

So I'm starting my day at 12 noon, I have a 16 hour window to drive 13 hours + 1 hour on duty. I only use 4 hours and stop at 4pm and take 10 hours sleep. What happens to the 16 hour window?
