C'mon! I know this has been done before but what we wannabes need is some "pump". All is NOT gloom and doom, it can't be! Tell us how you new drivers made it in spite of all the obstacles in your way. AND, how are you feelin' about 2010? I'd like to hear what the veterans have to say about what's in store for the near future (say from now until 2015).
How about a few success stories?

I always say brush off the negativity. I made a living for 32 years in trucking. Yeah, I job hopped, but, it was "allowed". That's just my style, lived in a 100 different houses, married 7 times, can't stay put, get bored to tears. Yet all my friends are as stable as the day is long. Same job/wife/house/car/ forever! I applaud them. Get and keep a positive attitude firstly, then, tell yourself YOU are going to be the exception in this business. You know the dispatcher you dislike so much? Guess what? He's a person just like you! Surprise! He ain't a God or someone you bow down to. Treat him as an equal, you need him, he needs you. Now, granted, some people are a lost cause. You cannot reason with them. If helps if you have an understanding of human nature. It's not about you, it's about us co-existing right here on God's great earth. You don't have to win every round, right? Who cares if you lose a round or two? The sun will still come up tomorrow. So, whatever you do in life, do it well. Be the best you can be at whatever you do. Gain all the knowledge you can and do not sit on your duff waiting for manna from heaven to fall into your lap. However bad you have it, someone has it worse. No guarantees, sorry.
JustSonny, TBigLug and groovemachine Thank this. -
You need to hear from those who " made it" in the past year . Reports from those that made it before that are irrelevant . It's a whole new ball game .

I have trained 14 drivers over the last year and a half, only 1 has made it. He is makeing a o.k. living, but has kept his head straight and has not listen to all the negitive people. When guys get on my truck they ask me about the money they will make and i give it to them straight. Most have no idea what they will make. Money is 1 small step in the hurdle what becomeing a new driver takes. This alone clears out 40% of guys in the first 2 weeks.
The 1 guy that has made it, might be getting a LTL job close to home for more money, he says it looks good. So i guess thats a success story.JustSonny Thanks this. -
Well my husband has been driving for nine years, but we only just bought our own truck a little over a year ago...
It was a tough year...not so much becuase ot economy, but of learning experiences...My husband did not know a lot a repairs, but let me tell you he paid attention! Now he can do the small stuff and prevent the big stuff! He learned about making the most for his miles by slowing down and increasing fuel mileage. He learned about using me to look up tolls and calculate net profit before accepting loads...he learned about tracking expenses. He learned about cooking on the truck, and more importantly making coffee himself.
There is still much to learn I am sure, but I would say we are successful thus far, and are 9 months from beingtruck payment free!!
Good luck in 2010!JustSonny Thanks this. -

So here is my story, I drove truck OTR over 26 years ago, gave up my CDL in 1985,I am 68, still need to have a decent job to be able to live in Southern California, I was laid off of my management job a year ago on Dec 31st, was on unemployment for eight months, during that time I was able to get EDD thru the WIA program to send me to CDL school, got my CDL at the end of April 09, drove my brother inlaw's truck hauling spring water off of the mountains in San Diego county free part time to get some seat time and get used to driving a 80k plus truck around town. I was turned down by Werner ( i feel because of my age but who cares), looked at Gordon's and a couple of other companys, My wife said NO OVER THE ROAD!!!!, so I started looking for local wk, mind you I had absolutly no recent experience, My brother gave me the OP's Managers telephone number where he works and although I had worked a couple of days before as a casual a month or so before ( they wanted to put me on as a casual and I passed) I called him and told him what he already knew, The company needed a driver in the LA area to do local and short haul to the Bay area, They flew me to San Jose, gave me a driving test up and down the 101 and a job, this has turned out to be the best job that I have ever had, I work my tail off, not for the money, but because I feel like I am part of what makes the company tick

Keep em' coming, I could stand to hear of a few success stories myself. Even knowing all the right people has'nt helped me that much because of the crappy economy.
JustSonny Thanks this.
