I have had my own authority now for 3 months. I have a comdata fuel card that I only use once or twice a month for fuel.( I don’t use the major truck stops if I don’t have to.) I do use it to pay lumpers 2 to 3 times a month if they don’t take cash or credit. Comdata charges me $15 a month and I want to get rid of it. How do you pay for lumpers?
How are you paying lumpers?

I usually dont pay for lumpers because I dont take loads that require lumpers, but if I ever do take a load that requires a lumper I will pay cash and then the broker will redo the rate con and add it on my rate. Some brokers I have hauled for will pay by comcheck, just get the amount from the receiver and call the broker then get the express code. If the broker does not pay for lumpers with comcheck and the receiver does not take cash I just wont take the load. I've never understood why do you charge me to unload the stuff you ordered...

Every place takes different methods for lumpers (cash, credit card, checks etc). I was hauling for landstar from time to time. I sign up for their account where they would transfer money for loads I moved. I would transfer most of that money out to my regular checking account and leave some small amounts. Like $100-150, and I would pay with checks from that account. Worked perfect, and cost nothing I believe.

I pay them with Starbucks gift cards.

I don't haul anything requiring lumpers anymore. That's one big problem solved. Once I reached that decision in my work as a company driver, it was time to find companies that did drop hook or certain freight that has no lumpers at all. You can say that the lumpers caused their own not getting any more work or money out of me or my company. Dispatch knows not to load with lumper unload. I would absolutely refuse it. (They can fire me... that's fine.)

I have camdata too. With it, I was able to sign up for some discount programs; at TA and Petros it is 24c off cash price. One good fill up and their fee is covered. I know it is still cheaper to fuel at some Ma & Pa fuel stops. The good thing about it is that they accept it everywhere. Some lumpers won't take cash.

Whenever I book a load that requires a lumper fee, I get the OK from the broker to unload the truck myself and pocket the fee. If not, then I don't take the load.
Everything else, the broker either needs to be available at deliver time to cough up a comchek number, or it needs to be prepaid.Rideandrepair and Trucker1972 Thank this. -
It's pretty rare that I haul anything that requires a lumper. I ask if unloading is prepaid, if its not I don't want the load. Once in a while I get hit with one out of the blue. On those loads I either pay cash or have the broker pay the lumper service directly.
