BC Government...so I'm presuming he's in British Columbia. But I have been wrong before.
Maybe he can look into company sponsored training? Or, if he is in the US, WIA or OJT funding? -
I'm sort of in the same dilema but on the other side of the border. Can't get gov't loan because the school is a "certificate" or non-degree program, or is not listed in their approved schools. Can't really afford another loan as I don't know how much i will be making to start and I have enough debt already.
This leaves me to either save (would take a year or two), Bank loan at 13% (piss poor credit prob won't qualify), sell some assets, (Debt to equity ratio makes this not viable), or raid my retirement account (401k).
If I raid the 401k and change jobs it goes into default and is an automatic disbursment subject to 10% penalty and state and federal income tax (30%). While not the end of the world, and entirely my fault for getting to this point, I think its what im going to do. This will allow me to take some extra to pay off some outstanding debts and hopefully improve my credit at the same time. -
mr plow, you have been misinformed. You can definately get government grants or loans for certificate programs in many career fields including trucking. You need to do some reasearch and find a school that is approved by the us board of education. Most trucking schools are not, but some are. Also many community collages offer truck driver training that you can get government money for. You just need to find whats in your area, I know of a couple places in Chicago that have federal student loans, I would assume there has to be something in New York if you look hard enough..
tyler, sorry to leave you hanging, but I dont know anything about Canadian policyTonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -

How much are they asking for training? Do you have a line of credit? You could always pull the cash necessary from a line of credit or even a credit card if you have to. However, you have to know where you will start working once you get your CDL. Once you start working, pay your loans off as fast as possible. I would recommend before even going to school, calling companies who may be prospective employers and ask them if they will hire you once done school. Also ask them if they are coming into their busy season or if it slows down at all. The more information you have the better. Are you looking to go long distance? I think there is also lots of local container hauling work around your area.
