I'm out here in the Wichita KS area, but its been a real pain trying to find something that isn't OTR. I got my CDL class A back in September, then went to work gathering endorsments. Airbrakes, combination, doubles/triples, tanker, manual, even got twic. As of now, my back ground check for HAZ is still being processed. I've been getting poor luck finding employment though indeed. Lately I've been contacting cement and trash companies through phone calls and their websites for the past week, but it's too soon to say if anything is really working.
Is there something else I could be doing to find a local job?
How can I get a local job freah out of school?

Yes it can work in your favour, they get to know you as a person, as the saying goes "its not what you know but who you know" that counts when it comes to getting hired. Just pop in maybe once a month to say Hi, hows it going any jobs available? maybe one day you'll walk in just when a job vacancy has opened up they may reason well we've got to go through x amount of job resumes while here right in front of us is someone wanting a job why not give him a go? Whats the worst that can happen? You may not get a job that's it.

Do that, plus, ask how long they keep job applications on file. This way you know when to apply again.

Hiring and freight demand slows down near Christmas and New Years. The "important people" are on vacation.
What companies came to your CDL school to recruit?
?
Have you tried food service and beverage companies? It's a lot of physical labor plus city driving. Most of those companies have people quitting all of the time and need more drivers.
