I read on a phone forum that plans like this can cancel your service if you eat up too much data by tethering. Is this what you mean by this?

I think on your $45 plan, you are okay for your tethered data use. The $45 plan allows 3gb of high speed data, then drops to 2G speed after, so they don't care how you use data, tethered or not, at only 2G.

2g speeds? That is no more than 150megabits per second. There is no way in HELL i would spend $45 a month for a cell phone just to use it as a data plan at 3G and then get bumped down to 2g speeds, thats ludicrous

I would much rather spend $20 a month for my phone to have hotspot access and have unlimited data on 4g lte speeds with sprint and not have to worry about getting throttled

Most of the walmart pre-paid phones don't allow tethering and or using as a hot spot, I didn't realize this til I put my glasses on and read the very very small print.

I have to chime in with the same thoughts as Aminal. I have a (now wait till you read the whole post, before you judge me) Metro PCS Phone. I paid $200 for the phone, and could not be happier with it.

Years ago, Metro PCS was a joke. Their service sucked, as did the low-end phones they offered. I was not expecting much when I walked into the local store, but I had to look at all options. I was surprised at how far the company has come since I had last checked into them.

They had a few plans to choose from. A $40 a month plan which was OK for talking on the phone, but had limits on the Data per month allowed. For $10 more, I got a plan with unlimited Internet, Texting, and Talking. I specifically asked about using my phone as a WiFi hotspot, which it does, and was told it would cost $5 per month to add that to my service. I used the service for a couple months, and was very happy with the results. Then my job changed, and I was no longer spending nights away from home, so my need for a laptop ended. Now I use my phone for certain Internet tasks, and leave the things it can't do for when I get home.

I have an LG Optimus 9, or Optimus Prime 9, or something like that. It's an awesome phone. I use the Apps for FaceBook, Google, and the GPS that came with the phone. I also installed Skype, and use it to call Internationally, at a cheaper rate then my monthly plan would charge me.

Every night I set up my phone, and hit the road. I fire up the GPS, which even though it is not "Truck Specific", does fine for me. I hear the voice directions from the GPS through my BlueTooth headset. When I stop for a break, I check in on FaceBook, and keep up to date with my friends. I have a Wife and Daughter in The Philippines, who I talk with every night through Skype. We talk just like we are on a regular phone, only I can see them, and they can see me. If I am talking to her through her computer, it does not cost me a penny. If I call her cell phone, it costs me about $0.15 a minute or so, with no connection fees or anything else.

Then I turn on the iHeart Radio App, and listen to a few of my favorite talk radio shows as I drive. If I am running the GPS at the same time, the radio app's volume turns down automatically when the voice directions for the GPS say anything. Then the volume comes right back up to where it was before the GPS cut in.

For all I use my phone for, I am thrilled with the service. I am so tired of AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon treating customers poorly. Years ago, I had to tolerate the bad customer service, and complicated billing, because there was no alternative that gave me the level of service I needed. Now, since Metro PCS has stepped up their game, I simply pay $50 a month ($55 if I need the WiFi hotspot feature that month), and never have problems. The iHeart app alone saves me the cost of Satellite Radio, since I no longer need it to listen to my favorite shows. Between that, plus all the free talking I do through Skype, I am saving well beyond the $50 it costs me. The fact that I didn't need to buy a separate GPS unit saved me more than the phone cost me.

Things are not perfect all the time, and yes, I do have one or two times a month that I have an area where service sucks, but 95% of the time, the service is top notch. If you think you need absolutely perfect service all the time, it makes me wonder what you did before there was such a thing as Internet through your phone. Get over yourself, and deal with the few times you can't get a signal. Believe me, the world will not stop spinning just because you were out of touch for an hour or two each month. The savings will make it worthwhile.

Just in case anyone takes this post the wrong way, I do not work for, and I am in no way, shape, or form involved in any way with Metro PCS, other than being a very satisfied customer. Maybe Trac Phone or Cricket have comparable services, but I never checked them out. One thing is sure though; I have gone almost a year now, without having a single problem with the billing at Metro PCS. Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint were always a never-ending drama with their billing departments, and their jacked-up prices. Before you laugh off the small guys, take a look at what they offer. You might be pleasantly surprised at what they offer.

I didn't know that either until I chimed in on a forum so proud of myself for figuring out how to get free internet OTR and someone informed me of this. Couple of folks said they (Straight Talk) would cut off my service and what not. But I figure I pay for the time, it's mine to use how I want to and there exists nothing with my signature on or check the box to agree on any agreement for them to try and sue me for more money so until they do cut me off, I'm gonna do it.

Don't forget, LTE is a GSM technology! Verizon and Sprint phones also have SIMs now. Can't go just by that.

I don't pretend to understand all the G things but I think that explains my not understanding the speed vs signal strength thing. Now that I think about it in that light, the times I experience slowness have been times when I had several things that were video intense going at the same time like Skyping while looking at weather radar and Street View or Google Satellite imagery. What I'm getting out of it is that once I use up 3 gigs of data it slows down to a slower speed network. Once on the slower network they don't care how much data I use. Makes more sense than cutting me off. Even the slower network is still faster than what I was paying for at truck stops and fast enough for Skype given that we live in the country and don't pay for the real high speed plan so my side of the connection is not the side we usually have trouble with. Netflix seems to do just fine even in slow mode and the other stuff I do online isn't real data intense and the times I want to use Street View and Google Maps to preview a place I've never been and it's slow, it's not all that slow. Being an old school self taught driver the fact I can do it at all is still a WOW to me so I just deal with it.

It's good advice. Doesn't matter if some put it down because it's still an OPTION to consider.

I use a Virgin Mobile WiFi just for my computer (have a "dumb phone"). I have not been in an area YET where I've been unable to connect. Been very happy with it and the price is right.
