The trick to the test is that usually there is nothing to hit. All there is, is lines painted on the pavement. Slide your tandems to the rear and look at the lines. Keep the lines two inches to the outside of your tires and just follow them. Remember that if the three points (rear tandems, Drive tires, and steer tires) are equal distance from the line, you are straight.
We had a guy in our class who did everything perfect. He got out of the truck after the test and was so proud of his self that he forgot to set the brakes. The truck roll down the hill and across the field and into a pond. He did better the second time.
How common is it to fail cdl skills test?was

If I had to put a number on it I would say 7 outta 10 fail (pre-trip, backing, driving) on the first go. I say that cause I know a trainer at a school and I've heard some funny stories. Seems like 3 tries is the lucky number...
brake test, backing and curbs seem to be the biggie, mixed with ignorant moments like taking seat belt off after pulling back into the parking lot, been giving a second chance on the brake test but forget to rebuild the air kinda thingsSingingWolf Thanks this. -
At our school there was a guy in the previous class that was still driving and doing pre-trips because he had not passed his test. He failed his test for the dumbest little things too. It's really hard to say what part of the test you're going to get nervous on ... my suggestion is practice the test from beginning to end... practice your pretrip from the same point all the way around the truck.
The testers don't care how much you waste taking the test. Each time the test is taken in Washington it's $100! -
I believe we're restricted to 30 mins. for the pretrip and 2 hrs. for backing and street (Combined I think) and our test is only $50 somehtin'.
I noticed in the 2002 Century that we have (Only been to the pad once and checked out that one truck so far) it seems to take a long time to build up the pressure from nothing. Might have to do with it having 2 tanks but I think it is just because it is old and abused. I also know that I won't be taking my test in that truck because the truck brakes don't kick on, when fanning them, until you have both tanks down to almost 0 psi. I doubt they'd even LET me take the test with that issue cropping up during pretrip. -
As the saying goes practice makes perfect buddy the idea is you try and perfect your reversing skills before going and doing your test that way you won't fail your practical test.

Instead of the limited get outs and pullups it would be great if it was just an automatic fail for hitting the cones or breaching the line with unlimited get out and pullups.
