Yes Sir. That was me as well.

I'm better with heights 'IF' there is something to hold on to. Walking on top of a flat load of drywall or lumber would give me the hee-bee-gee-beez, Having something to grasp on to would make me feel a lot more comfortable.

I stumbled upon this car carrier company by accident. It's within a mile of where the CDL school I just graduated from. I walked in their office and had an hour conversation with their Safety Manager and a company driver. Learned A LOT that day. Driver said $90k is easy with average around $75k.

This company pays percentage of the load. IIRC 26% and they run the SE Region.

BTW, what is bay ticket ?

At 57 years young, I'm extremely lucky and grateful to not have an serious physical aliments... yet. Pretty good shape and not afraid of hard work. On the other hand, my wife (of 37 years) is scared to death of me doing hard labor. Kind of agree. One significant injury and we are F'd. Seriously F'd. Five years away from SS (I have no intention of retiring then) is real close by. ........ Maybe I just answered my own question about car-hauling and flatbedding........... Hmm.....

I have an offer at SAIA for a City Driver position.... it will require 60 days of working on a dock. I guess to prove to the company your cut-out for the job. Not a problem for me but my wife is balking at it.... big time. It pays near $22 hour after the 60 days.

Then maybe you should give it a try. You never know you may really like it. Worst thing that could happen is you don’t like it and then go to SAIA, or you fall off the truck. Oops,,, it does happen just don’t let it happen to you! All the BS aside, it is really a great job most days, not so much today because everything including me moves slower in this cold.

A "bay ticket" is just a piece of paper in new vehicles you use to get out of the gate. Depending on the equipment you'll run you might be alright with the height. Most new trucks have guide wires on the headrack. Some people get nervous backing cars and trucks on though. FB95IMG9515.jpg
    And rightfully so...

To me car hauling is almost like a religion and every load is like a religious experience lol.
It’s a very satisfying job that not everyone can love and enjoy.
I am 57 years old also and walk the auctions and climb the decks every day of my work week.
Does my body ache from the work ?
Absolutely, but because of the love of the job I barely notice it unless I really sit down and think about it.
As far as heights go I’m not a big fan either but being on the top deck of a car hauler is never been an issue for me.
I would much rather be on the top deck of a car hauler standing beside a car with lots of things to grab on to in the event of a slip than be free standing on top of a 13ft 6 inch flatbed load tarping it.
In the end car hauling is a job you will either love or hate and you will get that answer fairly quickly once you start working in the field.
My vote is jump in and give it a whirl.
