My drivers are more or less contractors, most of them are free to pick their own loads with their own schedule. The productivity levels are much higher than if I picked their loads and told them what to do.

I have a few drivers who never hit their 34 hours, they make good money and take some short crappy loads I would never consider. one bundles ltl loads from a few shippers and makes good money that way, another does a dedicated which is five hours of work a day 6 days and he loves it, the money is good too.

Workers comp is covered by them through an additional pay, I have an agent who deals with all of that, it is cheap in my state so I can add something to their bottom line every week to compensate for it, health care is their problem, but I have contacts with three companies and some drivers go there. NO one seems to be complaining about the arrangement and my turn over is low.

My margin is right at 9.25% and that's alright with me, I make enough to put into other things and expand.

Carrier percentage is still a percentage I need to deal with. The pro's and con's of that decision will always be there unless I remove the equation.

For now I like the way things are.

There’s a lot that doesn’t add up here. I’m curious how many trucks they run, and how many people are trying to live off the trucks they run. Given the age of the truck and trailer, the overhead shouldn’t be so high that it’s killing them to have it sit as she stated in her first post.

I’d just throw out there that any “company” that can’t afford a $25 help wanted ad, shouldn’t be hiring
