In 2014 I spent 9 months driving for a trucking company in western Canada Alberta , most of my driving was hauling produce
Into the the USA my region at that time was anywhere west of the Mississippi River with a lot of loads loading at cargil meats at high river Alberta or jbs meats at brooks Alberta .I really enjoyed my time travelling the western USA got real familiar crossing Montana Wyoming Colorado Kansas Nebraska and down into Texas with some loads going to California north and south I-15 once crossed the border into Montana is a direct route to San Diego and a popular route for Canadian freight. do long haul companies recruit drivers from outside the USA 'I was amazed to see so many Arabics driving tractor trailer and they didn't sound American and plenty of Russians driving Illinois volvos and other breeds driving trucks with Washington state plates

I have no idea how you get a job in the USA.
You're right about the drivers you see. They seem to get a free pass on not following the rules. The politicians and police know what's going on but seem to look the other way.
I was fueling at a truckstop when a truck pulled in at the pumps beside me. Four Indian men wearing turbans and one Indian woman wearing the long flowing traditional dress and the red dot between her eyes, climbed out of the truck. They also got back in the truck and left while I was there.
If I remember correctly, the truck had a California address on the door.

I looked into it about 15 years ago. Basically if your Canadian born you can't. They do have a lottery system that you can apply too, but it's a wild card that you would get picked, but even that is limited to people from disadvantaged countries.

You need either a work visa or a permanent resident visa, just like for any other job that a non citizen would get.

    I have a green card.

Really easy if you have a green card.
If you don't I have no idea.

A lot of Canadians work here in the medical industry, they still live in Canada and commute daily. They have work permits to do so.

But the OP didn't say where he was from, so if he is from another country, then getting a permanent resident visa and a green card will allow you to work here.

The thing that isn't mentioned is the cabotage agreement we have with Canada, it prevents a Canadian based driver from hauling loads in the US for US destinations but they can pick up or drop off Canadian freight. Why some Canadians have work permits to allow them to do this.

I am a Canadian Citizen with a Green Card living with my American wife in South Carolina.
Either an American Citizen or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) can sponsor you after marriage. The entire process takes around 2.5 years until you have your Permanent Resident Card. This is the only way it can be done for a Canadian unless you enter the lottery and win.
USCIS doesn't consider truck drivers to be a skilled trade and say there are plenty of Americans capable of doing the job so work visas are not granted except for a limited amount for custom harvesters etc. on a seasonal basis and they are gone instantly.
