I decided to make my foree into town today. I live outside Grants Pass, Oregon, was headed into Medford. I've been drinking tons of water every day (well a gallon) and had to pee really bad so I decided to swing into the Pilot there in Central Point. I had my notebook with me.... I needed to start getting some interviews.....as I came around the corner I saw that there were TONS of trucks in the back. I started to :biggrin_2551:......freek. After coming out of the bathroom, I took a quick look around, not sure what to do, then left. All sorts of things going thru my head. I'll do it tomorrow, I told myself.

So I left and went further to the other side of Medford, to Winco, to get some rawhide bones for my dog and shop a little. Coming back, as I passed the Pilot, I said to myself, your gonna have to do it one way or the other. By now it was around 1:00 pm. Swung my car around and went back to the Pilot. This time, I drove thru the back lot where all the trucks were. Bunch of them lined up, I think they were sleeping. Trucks going thru the pumps, getting gas. I looked at all the trucks as I was slowly passing... looking for the red ones (i like the red ones). A few saw me and I wondered what they were thinking.

So then I went to the front, parked and went back inside the store. Didn't know what to do with myself so I went into the bathroom and washed my hands. Came out and faked like I was looking around. There were more truckers in there this time. You could really tell who they were too....lol

They would come in thru the back door all rumpled looking with their hair sticking up and smashed in at the sides.... ya all look like a buncha renegades :biggrin_2559:.... tee shirt, shorts and thongs... well the younger ones anyway.

There was never a time that felt 'right' for me to interview anyone. I didnt want to intrude. They looked like they were busy. I was freaked out about going outside to the back, I mean mostly I kept thinking they were going to think I was one of those lot lizard ladies. I dont look like one. I'm pretty big.... tall with blond hair but big, a big butt, and my clothes are plain, like tee shirt and sweats sorta thing.

I guess I had this image in my mind of just going into the restaurant area and sitting at a booth. Behind or in front of me would be a driver. We would both be eating and I could just casually ask him some questions..

It wasnt like that tho. Whats the best way to approach you guys when its a female? Is there a truck stop that is better oriented for that sort of thing... I dont want to bug the guy when he's busy...and I dont want him thinking I'm looking for some funny business...

I never did see any of those ladies back there either, btw. I didnt see any females back there, not even drivers.

I never did say anything to anybody. I decided to come home and ask you guys.

Interviewed for what purpose? If you are looking for info on a specific company, then walking up to someone from that company as he is parking is as good of a choice as any. You can also look around and see if the company has a nearby terminal, or if they are congregated at a specific shipper nearby. catching a driver when he is in a parking lot or a loading dock usually isn't too bad. Most drivers will take the time to answer questions, though it does work best if you have the questions kind of thought of beforehand, and have done a little bit of research and have some basic knowledge of the company.

If it's interviews for "Should I go into trucking" then it's just walk up and ask someone, but don;t get upset if not everyone answers that one as nicely as they should. You can catch someone at the tail end of a bad day, and they aren't the nicest of people due to circumstances beyond theur own control.

A little more info on what you hope to gain from these interviews would probably help us shape our answers a bit closer to your needs.

By the way, I am a professional, and I do not go to work in T shirt, shorts and thongs. I will be wearing a neat pair of slacks, a company shirt, and clean tennis shoes. if i have been out for a couple of days and have dipped into the clothing bag, then you may find me in a clean, solid color, pocketless t shirt, tucked in as it should be. I am a professional, and never look like a dirtbag when I am behind the wheel or on company time.

lol.... these guys looked like they'd been sleeping and driving for a few days... I didnt see anyone in there in a uniform or company shirt. It was either tee shirt and shorts or tee shirt and pants. Maybe it depends on the company you work for, dunno.

The interview is for the purpose of finding out about their company. I have certain companies picked out. I have gotten all the info I can get at this point from this site, (thanks, btw) now I want to talk to the drivers themselves. I do have certain questions picked out. Some are my own, a few are off Turbo's list, a few are from this Job Counsel thing I went thru. It was sorta intimidating at that truckstop.. maybe i will go back, park out back, wait for someone who is pulling in to park, then ask them if they have a bit of spare time... they wont be in the middle of anything at that point... yeah, that's a good idea..

Though it's not a hard and fast rule, the quality of the information you get will be controlled to some extent by the auality of the driver you ask. Personal appearance is a quick indicator of that.

Do your "interview" at the deli, or restaurant of the truck stop. There you will find the driver has more time, and inclination to talk than if you try to speak with them while they're getting parked, fueled, or otherwise taking care of business. Also, you are less likely to be harassed by the TS management, or, the more unsavory elements of trucking by not attempting to establish contacts in the parking lot. Regardless of your innocent intentions, someone will assume you are not so innocent, and react accordingly.

Like Burky said, some of DO dress like we have a little sense. I wear the company's button down shirt, tucked in, with black pants and work boots.

    We're not all "renegades".
