I grant you the title is a bit of a joke but seriously...

I want to make sure that I drive as safely as possible and with all of the hazards out there I thought that I would get some advice from you veterans here on the forums. Got any tips for a rookie?

    Thanks!

Well first off never drive faster than you can see. Yeah I know it's a line from Big Trouble in Little China but it's true. YOU have to be looking ahead of yourself and all the moves you make have to be planned. ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING AROUND YOU!!!!! Cars come out of nowhere and fast!!! Take your time on turns and off ramps, make sure you have the ROOM you need to turn that corner......Remember there is a big 53 foot thing behind you and you aint turning a car! Other than that if they Pizz you off too much crush 'em.....just kidding use your common sense and you should be ok.

Both of you give good advice but I wanted to know more...specifics. For instance. Suppose a company sends me to the Bronx New York. Just how in the world do you keep from hitting every car around you? They drive like they are nuts!

By the way I love Big Trouble in Little China. Have it on my Macbook...Popcorn? ;)

Nic- thanks that was great info really! but when I saw the thread starter that was my FIRST thought!! RUN all the 4 wheelers over!!! LMAO!!

Knightlock- I am not a driver but from what I have learned on here and from other drivers some just comes with experience and time. Same as when you learned to drive a 4 wheeler- you had to learn distance, space, timing etc no different than the truck. You have to learn to 'know' your size and how your vehicle handles on turns etc.

    Welcome to The Truckers Report!!!!

Thats because they ARE nuts. In a high traffic, high stress situation like that I slowwww down. It's better to take a corner real slow than to have to back up in the middle of traffic. Get in the habit of looking much farther in front of you that you are used to. Get used to people cutting you off, when it happens don't tailgate them just cause your pi$$ed off. Remember, you are the pro.

Watch the car several cars in front of you in traffic. You'll see and react to his tail/stop lights just that few seconds faster than if you focus on the one directly in front of you.

Wow you're already talking about the Bronx what are you a masochist?:biggrin_2555: Driving in ANY city is like that...try Chicago, Miami, LA, they are all the same in the end really. The locals in any place you go to drive like they have their privates stuck in the garbage disposal and are trying to get to the emergency room half the time. get used to it, but like I said and minnbowhunter said..slow way the hell down and take your turns as slow as possible, who cares if they get stuck behind you in traffic, you are working and you have alot of machine to be mindful of. On the east coast you will find that the streets are narrower so you will need to really mind your p's and q's.
Take your time and don't forget to breath once in a while too.

and I always had a copy of Big trouble with me on the road....great flick on a dark and stormy night....yada yada
