One thing that I wish more people would do when approaching an overpass is to assume there is gonna be merging traffic on the other side. If you're in the right hand lane, lift your foot just a touch and mentally prepare for the "oblivious" or "timid" driver merging in. Likewise, if you're in the left or center lane, just hold off your pass so you don't lock the driver in the right lane into having to do a panic stop. Give your brother trucker an "out". Only takes a couple of seconds and everybody flows safely.
How do I not kill people on the road?

Great example REDD, Thanks!
Man, I hope I am as Lucky as that one newbie that met the Legend # a truckstop....lolJustSonny Thanks this. -
On noyou just had to go there and feed that drivers ego
LMAO
What Redd had happen to him happens alot on the road ( not the SAME thing always) . There have been times I've seen some real MAJOR LEAGUE STOOOOOOOPID stuff out there.
Case in point, coming out of Tennessee on 65 heading into Alabama. About 1-2 miles in front of me I see a Werner behind a Crete truck. Ok they are both in the right lane no problem since mt truck can go as fast as it wants to. As I get closer though Werner decides to be billy big trucker and pass Crete. I get off the hammer and hang back waiting for him to pass. He gets his truck past the crete truck (barely) and immediately cuts back in front of him. That put crete on the shoulder, werner cut over with less than 2 feet of room in front of crete. I was about half way past crete when this happened. I was not tailgating werner and had not gotten on the radio to brow beat him either, until he cut off crete. When I started letting werner know what a schmuck he was he lost control of his vehicle and almost flipped it on the shoulder. All this was going UP HILL so speed had dropped to 60 or slower. My point stupid things happen because there are too many stupid drivers both 4 wheelers AND big trucks. Just sayingCropduster and JustSonny Thank this. -

SMITH SYSTEM Remember those two words! That is the name of a defensive driving course and is offered by some companies and should be mandatory by all for all. It has a lot of very basic info about following distance, speed, being aware of whats around you and most important LEAVE YOURSELF AN OUT!!! A lot of driver's will scoff at it and say I don't need a stinking course and then you see them drafting the truck in front of them. Check out the course it's only a couple hr and well worth it!
STUPID DRIVER ANTICS? Don't get me started, I run into all the crazy NYC ppl heading home every day, can ya beat that?Cropduster and JustSonny Thank this. -
This is your best advice: When driving a truck, Look up (low hanging trees, bridges etc), look down (obsticles in roadway), look in front, look behind, look to your left/right, be aware of any and all cars and trucks around you and understand fully that you are driving a big beast that cannot stop quickly, can kill a family in a second, must manuever in impossible places at times, and must stay cool and calm at all times. If you're a hot head, stay away from trucking.
johnday, Blue Screen and JustSonny Thank this. -
I hate to be the one to point this out, but you were in fact tailgating werner.
If you were even next to Crete at all when werner moved over 2 feet in front of him it means you were too close.
That would mean you were less than 1 truck length behind. You should not be within 2 or more. I know at times it is necessary in situations like this to be closer than you would like. But within 2 is bad news.
Anyway.
Just a point to make on the thread.
When in City traffic you should always go 1 or 2 miles per hour slower than traffic. This way you will always have room in front of you. Yes, 4-wheelers and trucks will pass and get in your safety area. But since you are going slower they will continue to move away. So you should always have some space.
I believe this was part of the "SMITH" system, but I am not sure. I was told to do do that in driving school like 19 years ago. Same with the always leave yourself an out, timing of lights (so you may not have to stop) and other things that always use to be taught and are now not.JustSonny, Cropduster and johnday Thank this. -
drive according to your abilties---if you arnt comfortable going fast on snow and ice then dont--doesnt matter how many times you are passed
and as winter is soon approaching--start increasing your stopping distance and slowing more before you make a turn
when your trailer pulls out to pass you --it usually leads to a bad situationCropduster, johnday and JustSonny Thank this.
