So if brokers don't want to deal with new carriers and carriers don't want to deal with new brokers how do any of them get any business. I'm a recently retired driver who is now trying out the broker thing. As an ex O/O I understand finding a handful of good brokers you can trust. The last 15 years of driving I worked with 5 exclusively and had 4 backups. The last 10 years I didn't even subscribe to load boards because they kept me moving. But I remember when I was starting out being on the phone constantly, reading contracts over dinner and haggling like mad. So now as a new broker I'm stuck again. I'm not trying to get a bunch of old time carriers, although that would be nice, but am trying to target newer ones who may need to pay the bills.
I'm set up with the capital to pay on a net 15 term which is reasonable. If I can get payment from shippers at time of delivery I will pay the carriers at time of delivery but those are few and far between. I've actually turned down loads from shippers because I don't have carriers to cover them and know I won't be able to get them covered in time from the boards.
I had a guy call me today on one of my loads posted and told me on the phone my price was better than most he had talked to. We exchanged information on the phone and he said he would call me back. Less than a minute later he calls me and says I see you've only been in business for 4 months I don't deal with new brokers.
So you would rather sit at a truck stop for 3 days instead of making a decent amount of money? Are there that many new brokers out there nowadays that screw up everything for the honest ones?
How do newbies get any business

Brokers going out of business is the greatest scam on the market for someone wanting to retire to Belize. If you have an Internet Truckstop account look at all the recent brokers that went south owing truckers money. Here is just a short recent list. The biggest one I've seen so far was $784,000
$237,000
$48,000
$343,000
$295,000
$264,000
$99,000
If your a successful broker and have a big account like Nucor Steel you can rack up some serious cash before anyone realizes your not paying. It takes about 2 months before the cats out of the bag. I'm friends with a broker for Nucor and talked to him about this. He gets paid pretty quick from Nucor and moves about 10 loads per day 7 days a week out of Huger, SC.
We ran the number once and this is what he could get away with with an average load bringing in $2,000
10 loads a day at an average of $2,000 is $20,000 for 60 days is $1,200,000. (That's 1.2 million dollars!) -
It can be difficult for a new broker. We don't do business with new brokers due to the potential payment issue. I only have a few brokers with whom I currently do business. I greatly reduced the number when the economy crashed in 2008. On a very few occasions, I have done business with a new broker, but only if I can get paid with a comcheck or other guaranteed payment before the truck is unloaded. If you have the cash, you could pay carriers when they deliver the load until you build a relationship with them. If you don't have sufficient cash flow to do that, you could find a factor that will finance your receivables until you build up your reserves. It is just going to take time to build your business. I have been fortunate to have not lost much to bad receivables, but I am careful to whom I extend credit and do credit checks on anyone prior to extending terms. I also do periodic checks to make sure nothing has changed. I think the primary reason many get hit with bad debt is that they don't bother to check credit. I wish you well. Be patient. Keep track of those with whom you do business and use them for references to new carriers. You could offer quick pay with no discounts to encourage carriers to do business with you.
Lite bug, DoneYourWay, Bry and 1 other person Thank this. -
I was looking into a factoring company but after talking it over with my shippers they weren't dead set against it but not excited about the extra paper work in the billing process. I tried a couple loads were I paid by comcheck as soon as delivery conformation was received. While I was able to cover it okay it really puts a strain on my budget. Most of my shippers are set up on a net 30 payment terms. I'm thinking of maybe working as an agent for Logistics Dynamics or someone like that for a few years so that I can get contacts and experience. Was thinking of Logistics Dynamics because with them I don't have to sign a Non-Compete Agreement. Thanks for the helpful replies I understand now that there are a lot more bad brokers then I thought there were.

I am wondering how you as new broker get your new clients? How you are going to find first client?

I am a fairly new carrier and have been in business since July 2013 with a 83???? MC#. I was in the Monroe,La area about this time last year and was not getting many bites on any decent loads when I had a new broker with a higher MC# than mine call me about a light load paying a great rate to Jupiter,Fl. At first I said no because of him being so new then he called me a bit later with a better rate and a list of references for me to call. I called a few and they all said good things so I took a chance and booked it. I figured brokers took a chance on me being a new carrier so I would do the same. To this day that broker has been the quickest to pay me he had to have sent the check the same day they received the paperwork.

It's true, trust has been compromised in the industry and to really build that trust between a new broker and carrier, you will need to have cash up front and pay within 48 hours via ACH or Wire - once established (3-5 loads) then it can get more relaxed. Problem is - the cash, you might want to look to a factoring company and adjust your rate to compensate for the 2-3% they will take. But, they will take the 'risk' for you with their database of trusted carriers.
indspirit and DoneYourWay Thank this.
