You can always call local law enforcement to ask about a detour route you plan on taking.
D.Tibbitt, Farmerbob1, FoolsErrand and 1 other person Thank this. -
I do that pretty often but a few times discovered that the podunk southern hollar yer in doesnt actually have any law except 35 miles away to the county seat its in... And the lady who answers has no idea how to drive anything bigger than a tahoe.

Not to "reroute", just to use it like an atlas/map. Zoom out of the map so you can see. Truck routes are usually highlighted in some way, but not always.
This brings me to my biggest peve for GPS systems. They don't have the processing power to handle zooming out and panning around the map to find another route quickly. They often lock up/freeze when you do it. Which makes them useless when you need them. And it happens often enough when the road or entrance ramp is closed for construction and you need to figure out where to go quickly. Only if you are lucky there is a place to pull off and work something out.
Asking on the CB for an anternate route helps also.Farmerbob1 Thanks this. -
Well, do it the same way you find alternate routes around scale houses. lol
I guess I never knew it was so complicated if there was an alternate route, If I couldn't get any info on the radio, and there was something resembling a road going in the general direction I needed I just took it, been known to run dirt roads a few times.
I have been stuck where there was no place to get off at all, I-17 north of phoenix comes to mind and with a fatality on a sunday night, just went to bed.D.Tibbitt, LoSt_AgAiN and Farmerbob1 Thank this. -
We throw our hands up in the air and cry: Please, won't a milkhauler tell me how to get around?
Seriously, dude. We can manage. No need to worry. -
That's a little ####y. Seems like other drivers talk down towards milk hauling and I don't know why. I don't make excuses. I've already made 57k with 2-1/2 months to go. Every job has its own challenges and I was just wondering how someone not familiar with the area copes. Navigation was something I struggled with in my very brief time driving otr.
Challenges I face.
-farmer driveways are awful in the winter. They plow but don't salt. I bring athracite coal ash on my truck
-winter driving. There is an 1,100 page post here on this forum titled "what if it snows". The short answer for me is regardless if it snows or not I'm driving unless it's an act of God storm. It's just the way it is. We HAD a driver that cried the Blues "I'm not driving in ice, I'm going to quit". He came from OTR driving. He no longer works here.
-backing into oatka. It's very tight. Inches on each side of the tandem. I have learned techniques to get me in there. I have never hit anything. I have watched OTR drivers struggle to get in that place. I have helped some with tips backing in.
We are in this industry and all of its types of driving together. One job is not more important then another. No job driving is void of its own challenges.FlaSwampRat and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
