this is what I've run into out the road.
DOT in Cal, Ar, Canada not letting adjust a brake under penalty of fines.
How do you adjust the trailer brakes?

also had companies I worked for tell drivers, if they put a wrench on the tractor or trailer, they would get fired.

Then I guess it’s a good idea nobody knows about the light cord socket I replaced while backed up to a loading dock once.kylefitzy, Diesel Dave, Numb and 1 other person Thank this. -
Gee, am I THAT old? I remember circa 1988, the 76 truckstop in Reno, when most of the drivers heading westbound took a few minutes to tighten their slack adjusters before entering the Sierra Nevada mountains (and that corrupt CalTrans scale at Truckee..). I always kept a 7/16" combination wrench on my dash.
Numb Thanks this. -
I had a Colorado DOT find 2 brakes out of adjustment. When I told him I would adjust them, he asked to see the card or document from the company that confirmed I had been trained in brake adjustment and that I had permission from the company to adjust the brakes. I did not have either a card or document so he would not let me adjust them.
You need to ask you company if you are allowed to do the adjustment.
And by the way it's not a 7/16" on the slack. It's 5/16" You need to move the safety spring up then you can adjust them. I use a small screwdriver then this tool on a ratchet. You can pick one up at Napa or on Chinazon.
Sirscrapntruckalot, xsetra, striker and 3 others Thank this. -
Speedy356, Diesel Dave and ElmerFudpucker Thank this.

How about adjusting by the stroke(correct way) instead of clicks/turns?
If they're Haldex, it's a 7/16
If they're Meritor it's 5/16
If it's a 9/16 it's ancient LOL
A lot of the time it's a broken spring in the chamber, wore out S-cams/bushings, not adjustment
That's why a lot of company's don't want you to touch them. -
I’m telling you the way I was taught in bendix brake school.Feedman, Sirscrapntruckalot, Oxbow and 4 others Thank this. -
Oxbow, Diesel Dave and ElmerFudpucker Thank this.
