Well...yes I did!! But what I am trying to find out is what people are using while they are on the road!! I am getting ready to start and I want to stay connected to ya all!! What are you using??

There a VAST threads in this section of the forum on this subject as well.

But in general the drivers use one of these the most:

- An cellular aircard (plugs into the USB port of a laptop)
- A cellular hotspot (wireless connection to a laptop with capable phones and "miFi" devices)
- Cellular "tethering" (connecting via wire or wireless and uses the phone's data plan rather than a separate data plan or device)
- WiFi (connecting to a business, truck stop, etc near where you are stopped)

Each of these methods has its advantages and challenges. And each comes with varying pricing.

I have the AT & T aircard that hooks up to the USB port. Service since 2007 so it is out of contract. When I stay to the 5gb it is around $60.00 plus $6.99 for the ins. But watching you tube or any movie would eat up gb real fast and since at&t can't make up their minds what they are going to charge I have paid $50.00 most often for the overage, but..,, daughter bought grandson age of empires 3 and it was all a download off the internet of over 3 gb, and ended up costing between me and the game about and extra $100.00 this past month.

 

Oh and I forgot to mention, I think maybe other companies are doing this also. but this last overage I had to wait a day before they would unblock the thing where it would work. It seems they have a dept now that goes over what is going on and has to release it before they will turn it back on. I guess maybe they were getting stiffed on bills??? but I have always paid ours because we needed it.

Using AT&T for cellular phone/data service, and having a phone that has "internet sharing" (mini wifi hotspot), I leverage the data on the phone's plan. Any overage is priced out at the same rate as in the base plan, so it's not a huge deal if you go over from time to time. If you're a real heavy data consumer, you may consider getting a second [data] device (and monthly service plan) through a competing carrier but buy the device outright so as to avoid any contract requirements. You'll find that in some areas, Verizon is stronger than AT&T, and vice versa.
