Hello. I am new to this forum board and this is my first time posting. My question is how do I go about getting a cdl learners permit in Illinois? I know you have to get the cdl book and study it and take the required test. My question is where would you take the test to get the learners permit. Do you take the test at the DMV? Do you know if you usually have to schedule a time to take a test or can you just walk in and take it?

Well here in Wisconsin you take it at DMV...and yes I do believe you can walk in and take it. I would suggest that you can your local DMV office and get the info from the people that do it.

Every motor vehicle department/bureau has a permit book for CDL, just like drivers license. I went and got the book, and got to know it front to back. The questions on the permit test in New York were mostly verbatim. If you go to a driving school, I think they dedicate time to learn and attain the permit, at least the one I went to did.

There is about a 99.999% probability that you will get a more accurate answer by calling your local DMV office or searching your state DMV website, than you will on this board.

I believe that the suggestion that he call the DMV was made.

Most of the time you will get the permit while in school. The school I went to had that as part of their whole program. You might want to check with the schools you are thinking about as well.

the benefit of the schools is you get videos that also cover the CDL manual and tests..you also get the benefit of taking many practice tests in school as well. if one goes to the DMV and fails the tests, and depending on the state, you either wait a few minutes and retake them, of in some states, you have to go back in a few days......

some people choose to get the permit on their own...but guess what...many schools put you into the CDL permit class, since the tuition pays for this, and to put that student into the field earlier than all the rest, actually disrupts the flow of the others.

rocknroll nik and Lilbit Thank this.

Thank you everyone. I kind of thought it was done at the DMV but I couldn't get a clear cut answer to the question on the illinois DMV website. I found out that they have the CDL book online but I do want to get a physical copy.

:biggrin_25514: I don't know if Leaners Permit was a typo, a freudian slip, or intentional, but I got a chuckle out of it. :)
