I know somebody that wants to get their CDL and I heard on here that they give WIA grants? How does this work? Does the person have to be on unemployment? What if they just want to change careers from being burned out?

Go to the unemployment office. There are income requirements. You can't make over a certain amount in the last 6 months. Doesn't matter about your last job

Thanks Jrock, the person in question has been working the last six months so I guess there goes that plan.

Well if he was making a lot of money he won't get it, but on a lower to middle class salary he may get approved

That's right, unemployed or under employed, and he may qualify. Florida is pretty easy with WIA program.

I used WIA to go to school in MS, also used GI Bill and received that as refund. I haven't been unemployed longer than a day since I was 16. It is all based on how many applicants they have. As with any bureaucracy, they have a goal they must hit. In this case, it's scholarships to give out. It's based off need first, so the greater the need, the more likely to get the grant. However, if they need to get 15 people in a school and only 10 people who are on government assistance apply, they take those 10 and start looking at low-income applicants not on assistance. If there are only 4 of them, that leaves 1 they have to give out, and pretty much anyone who applied, regardless of income level/need, they will get approved.

be careful, it is ONLY a grant for x amount of dollars, i think up here, about $4,000

you will have to find a school, with a class that only goes for that amount, otherwise, i do believe you have to apply for a student loan for any balance above the grant money/school tuition.

so get the facts at YOUR state unemployment office.
