Take all the room you want. The truck I drive is mine as well as the trailer and tires. I usually go int the oncoming lane to have way more than enough room. When maneuvering these long trucks and trailers, all bets are off. I am going to do what is the best for me. You should see the crap I have to pull sometimes to get down a one way the wrong way. That is the problem the city is not made for trucks. Now back to your question, as wide as you can. For real, as wide as you can. Better to be safe, and not need to buy new tires, then worry about how someone feels about you blocking the road and having to get out of your way. Tires are $300 and up each. Boo ya!

Exactly! Luckily I'm not in San Francisco or New York where there's a ton of narrow, one-way streets but sometimes I have to drive through some pretty sketchy roads that definitely weren't made to accommodate a large truck - especially one hauling a trailer. And a lot of the time those "no trucks over XX tons" signs are posted wayyyy too late and I'm forced to perform some crazy u-turn so I don't end up getting a ticket. Sometimes I just say screw it and go for it but lately I've been trying to obey ALL of those signs.Pmracing Thanks this.

I would rather get a ticket for blocking traffic than running into something or over someone.
Besides....unless a cop is right there, and in a particular bad mood, they won't ticket you.
99% of law enforcement will respect your attempts to be safe. In fact...it's been my experience that they will actually get out and help you negotiate a tight situation. -
That's good to know! When I first started driving I was at a scale and didn't see the green arrow to turn in for inspection and received a ticket for failing to obey a traffic signal.
Supposedly they also tried calling out to me on the loud speaker but I didn't hear anything. Ever since then I've been really paranoid about traffic signs. I suppose in a way it's a good thing, though.
edit - Oh, and the reason they even wanted me to pull in for inspection was because my boss thought our truck didn't need declared weight stickers on the doors.

Nothing wrong with that. Plus, when the 4-wheelers get their jimmies rustled and start honking, I simply recall what douchebags they were 10 minutes ago on the interstate, then smile to myself.

The handbook said start flashing turning single 100 feet before the turn. Slowly block the other lane, and wait for a green light. You want to make sure the left lane is block and wait tell it is safe to make your turn. Also you don't want to swing left other drivers will think that you are turning left, and they will hit you. you make a wide right turn into the other lane, and finish in the lane you want to go, and i suggest you watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUuykWghNTk

I hate that my instructor rushes me while I'm turning I like to turn in the gear i start off in to take my time and figure out how to turn correctly.

usually I judge them using the olympic model of a 10 score. half of which is technical merit the other half on degree of difficulty. Do you remember anything from geometry from high school ? If not the other option is to get one of those die cast model trucks and trailer they sell in some truck stops and play with it. Once you can visualize what is happening you will be able to make perferct turns every time.
