Hi Im on the verge of signing up for a trucking school but I have so many things that are on my mind and that's why I would like to know ...how do you know if trucking is right for you???Right now I have been a hairdresser for 15 years and I admit I need a change! My brother was a driver but he had nothing but negative things to say "they lie to you " They promise the world and give you nothing. So needless to say he now is a welder.I have been thinking about this for a while but I had children and now they are mostly grown and moved out. Here are my concerns when I drive it's "to" a destination with this driving is the destination.Do you get claustrophobic in the cab of the truck? What if I go through the training and realize I don't like it.Also being a woman is it a rough run.Im not a bossy type so is that a problem?Any advice would be appericated .Also is there any way to go for a ride just to see what its like.I talked to CRST and they said my first 8 months would be from IL to CO well any and all advice would be gladly accepted thank you!!!
how do you know???

Well, In my out spoken opinion, you will be just fine.... give it a try and you may love it! It will take a couple trips to get use to the whole gig, I don't think you will get claustophobic...lol...And if it ends up not being your thing, you will still have your CDL and can always fall back on it if need be. Get your feet wet and go for it! Don't limit yourself to OTR, you can do pretty good running local as well... Also, all large companies promise you the world, fact is, that's never gonna happen. You wont get rich by any means but can make a comfortable living if you choose the right company... Just my two cents! Good luck to you............

I am a female driver too. I am a claustrophobic and inside the cab is no problem for me. It is not hard being a woman driver out there. Lots of drivers will usually help you with sliding tandems and fifth wheels and such. I started with CRST back in 2004 and back then CRST wouldn't go anywhere thru Colorado on I-70 west of Denver. They used to route you up to I-80. If you don't mind being with a team driver (which is the way CRST runs) then you will have someone to talk to and to teach you. Try it out you might like it. B4 I drove truck (10 years ago) I was a claims adjuster for Travelers Ins. Love being on a truck. Think you will like it. You'll never know til you give it a shot! Good luck and hope evthing works out for you!

actually it's quite cozy. lol sitting in the truck at the end of the day, watching the world go by from your own little world. crack a good book and kick back on the bunk with the radio on low. ahh, what a life !!

The solitude does get to some people though. If you need interaction all the time, it'll get you down quickly.
Being somewhat on the loner-side myself, suites me just fine.
However, being socially cumbersome will create problems for you... be it shippers, receivers, your own dispatcher or wherever. Some savvy and an upbeat attitude goes a long way in this industry (and will sometimes earn a favor), since many don't have that.
You being a female, you might need thick skin to resist anonymous 'tards on the CB and lonely truckers mustering every ounce of charm they have at stops.
Aside from that, it's a decent living. Trying at some times, with unpleasant people, weather, deadlines, incompetent admin personnel, etc. I enjoy it though.sizzorgirl67 Thanks this. -

Most people already "know". But if you decide to do it the school/ training can make or break you. You didn't say where your from and I'm not asking, but take a look at Millis Trucking. The offer top shelf training you will have to sign a contract to work for them(for a year I think)to pay for your "free" CDL. Type Millis into the search box at the top of this page and start reading.Just my $0.02.
