But the pay is SO good there.

And we all know about the southern California beaches.
They are so clean, the water so warm...

Hawaii is like the deep south.
    They don't like outsiders.

They tolerate tourists, but that is all.

Your otr time started when you left the terminal with a load , whether you were in training or not, you were Over The Road.

My hire date is the first day of orientation and my vacation pay was calculated from that date also. As I see it, I was an employee whether I was sitting in a room watching Safety videos, in a trainer's truck or a truck of my own.

I guess I should mention I didn't sign a contract or go through company cdl training or anything like that. I don't owe anyone.

I can't see why a company would treat their drivers like that, because most would just quit without any $ owed. Too many other companies. It costs the company more money to get a new person in the seat than to take slightly cheaper freight to get a driver home one weekend per month.

In my case, OTR has been a nice life experience, but one I care not to prolong. I was thinking about looking for local jobs after 1 year OTR experience. Probably in Nevada, so as to still be close to Oxnard, but not have to pay the CA rent.

Some local jobs will only require 6 months experience....you might find some that do.
