I would say they are right up there, especially since the Canadian dollar is doing better than the U.S. Dollar!

Actually i was in fact talking about o/o'ing for a carrier. Ive never seen these mysterious "boards" everyone talks about. I think they're anomalies that only appear for 5 seconds at a time every other full moon

I was missing the fsc i guess which makes it a little easier to swallow the buck rate. The guy who said it was a good way to get your feet wet in the o/o realm makes a good point. I might end up following his lead at some point

What I could never understand about all this is why are there so many guys who say "I only get 90 cpm for a base, but then 50 cpm for my fsc makes up for it"...why are you relying on the fsc to keep yer head above water? If the price of fuel comes back down and the fsc goes away, will you survive then? Think about it for a while... The carrier is scrapin off HUGE $$ to pay you 90 cpm and then make you feel better with a fsc. I am leased to a carrier that pays me what I need without the fsc, just like it should be, and then the fsc on top of all that. I dont know of many O/O's who can have an operating cost on their truck of less than $1.10/mile...

I have to way in on this one. I don't understand why O/O have to make $2 and up to stay in bussness. I work about 11 hours a day, home every day, and 2 days off, I run Walmart freight now out of Johnstown. Mutiple stop which I get paid /stop plus mileage and FSC. I average 1.48/mile. I have no lay overs, pack a lunch, so no road exspenses. Don't pay for plates or IFTA anymore, Insurance is 1900 a year for bobtail, run out loaded and back mty, beat their miles 90% of the time so I'm getting about 90-100 miles on average paid that I don't drive a week, fuel discount roughly .30/gal, About 30% discount on tires and parts, enjoy their breakdown support, and I net 1800-2100/wk. Other O/O at the account can barely afford to fix their trucks doing the same as I. Everytime the come over to my house their always asking the same question, how do you do it? My home is a 7 year old newly constructed 3600sqft with a semi finished basement of 1750 2 car garage sitting on 4 acres. I owe less than half of what it's worth. Own both vehicles, boat, snowmachines out right. So now that you have an idea what my 1.48/m as goten me, I will tell you the secret. IT'S MONEY MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the rest like Volvo and Cowpie and the rest on this thread that have an understanding of 1/m freight leasted on to a company, that i forgot, I agree 100% with yahs. When I ask the other O/Os what their fuel mileage is, I don't know. How much their maintenance is per year, I don't know. What their averaging per mile, I don't know. What did you pay for fuel yesterday /gal, I don't know. But they can tell me how much they spent on a new dump trailer and what it does, and the 5k mattress, how good they sleep. GET THE PICTURE!!!!!

I've been debt free for over a decade and I couldn't make it on a $1.40 a mile from the fall of '09 thru the fall of '11 when I tried.. ..and fuel cost a $1 a gallon less then. A 30 cent per gallon discount is about 5cpm value give or take - I'd be surprised if the value you get from all the other "freebies" add up to more than 25cpm, including maintaining a trailer. I started with $15K in the bank and it was gone so fast the first time things went south in a big way. I felt lucky to leave there with a few thousand in the bank - might as well have been broke for the two years of my life I gave away for their profits - that's what it felt like... I was to the point of selling the truck and saying to heck with it. And for the record $2 a mile with $4 fuel is a low end average of where one would want to be, including deadhead - read that every mile the truck turned - to have any real shot at making some profit off one truck in a single income household. $2 a mile freight is the cheap stuff really.

Im content being leased, I had my own authority til the economy craahed in 08. My take home now really isnt that different without the headache. If you factor in time spent on paperwork, billing, collecting, finding freight etc... Anyone with common sense and is budget minded can make it and still live comfortably.

Evidently didn't see my $.83 average cost per mile for 2013 year to date I posted. And that includes my Blue Cross Blue Shield health plan costs. Even without the fuel surcharge, the carrier rate I get covers that with some left over.... even the lower deadhead rate from my carrier covers that. In the last 5 years, my average cost per mile has never exceeded $.90 a mile in any given year. Maybe those folks that can't seem to operate a truck for less than $1.10 a mile could stand to take a business management course.
