how do you respond to a crazy low rate from a broker?

I tell him what rate I can do it for & 9 times out of 10 the call stops there. More than 9 times out of 10... Not a lot of wasted time or explanations -- just a quote. But occasionally they negotiate or call me back later and I wind up on the load.

In fact, I remember one load in particular where the broker offering $600 on 442 miles "to get my driver out of the weather." I countered with $2,000, he said he couldn't do it, and we hung up amicably. 45 minutes later he called back saying he could do it.

I don't see ANY long term benefit to swearing or being rude. Might make you feel good for the moment, but it is unprofessional & could only limit your future options.

You only need go once and the truck stops alone will send you running in the other direction.

My first time in Larado I had two illegals trying to hide up in my air dam. I went to the bathroom at the shipper because I coudnt do it at the Loves, was just too nasty. As I was leaving I kept hearing thuds on top of my sleeper. I stopped right before the gate, went around back and saw a sneaker moving. I said come on down. Then I saw not one,.. but TWO heads pop out. Then I got worried and checked under my trailer and tractor for more. Nope,.. just those two. Last thing I needed was to get busted at the check point with two illegals on my roof.

Second time I went to Larado I almost got into a fight with a hispanic who was eating a sandwich sitting in his sleeper while parked at the pump with 2 trucks behind him. I told him to move it,.. next thing I know he wants to fight. Skinny little guy half my size and height. I didnt know whether to take him seriously or to just laugh.

I didn't call about a load going to Laredo. I posted a truck in GA looking for a load to Dallas TX and they called me. Its gonna take a realllllllllllly good rate to get me to Laredo.

When it comes down to it, we all have to do what we have to do out here. Sometimes it makes you cringe but we suck it up and do it anyway. Sometimes you have the luxury of hanging up on that broker with the rediculous load rate and sometimes you have to say yes out of desperation. You hate yourself for it in the morning but at the moment it seems like the right thing to do. My standard answer is to counter with an acceptable rate and see what they come back with...if it's not good enough, I wait for a better load.

Something to think about. 97% of the trucks on the road are owned by carriers with 20 trucks or less. I have heard people say "you might not haul it for that but Mega will just to keep the trucks moving" that may be true but megas aren't the majority. Don't just say no thanks and hang up, educate them. Yes you have time, your riding down the road with your blue parrot head set on or your setting in a truck stop somewhere. You have time. That entire conversation took maybe 2 minutes. Did it do any good? maybe? maybe not? Probably not but I was bored as hell riding down the road listening to truck drivers Not talking on the cb and I had nothing better to do with my time so that guy got the same speech everyone gets when they come at me with some stupid number. I will sit down and shut up now.

Yes, Laredo is bad, but not near as bad as the rate offered.

I too have deadheaded to Laredo from San Antonio to get a good paying load back to DFW. If ever in Laredo again I'm sure that same broker will have a load for me and that's the only reason I listened to the load specifics.

I'm in business to make a profit. Pay my rate and it'll be there. Otherwise, have a nice day. ~Click~

I know I said I would sit down and shut up but I am setting at a dock waiting soooo I have time on my hands.
If you walked onto a car lot and said I will give you 30 thousand dollars for that red car over there (even though you know the car is priced at 40k) and the salesman said Thanks for stopping by have a nice day then turned and walked back into his office how many cars do you think he would sell? Would you ever step foot on that lot again? But that's not what happens, the salesman starts talking and he keeps talking because the longer he keeps you there the better his odds are of selling you a car. It might not even be the red car you initially asked about but he doesn't care cause he sold a car and made a profit. This business really isn't much different, your selling a service instead of a car.
