How do you stay up to date on all the rules?

This is actually very helpful, and exactly the kind of information I'm looking to find out!
If my ideas already exist in some form, then I need to know before spending a ton of time on them.

At the same time, it seems not every employer is using an electronic system (at least until legislation kicks in), so many people are still using paper. So do people only use apps like ELogs when their employer has purchased it and requires them to use it?

If there were a free or very cheap alternative, I wonder if drivers would use that - what would it take to get people off paper?

I hate to Poo Poo the thread, but do more research before you spend to much time on said apps. I ran with ELogs for a few years with one of my last carriers. I'm back on paper now, but ELogs will be law soon. Just that one carrier I ran with on ELogs had numerous apps built right into the tablet. Apps that, back then, included such things as maint records, tractor history, trailer history, truck stops, maps, AND cell communication with 'hot button' calls for emergencies etc. The carrier was a car haul carrier, and the ELog was a Samsung Tablet that was removable from the truck to take home or into the hotel, etc. I could use the tablet for limited personal use ( checking email, surfing YouTube or Google etc ) and I could use it to plan the next days / weeks / months travel, routes, stops for maint, etc .... the company also had instant communication with me via call or text on the device. I received, thru apps, road closures, construction delays, etc ... The ELog also knew where I was going and was able to tell me roughly where a good deal would be for a meal would be up the road.

Build an elog that meets all the requirements to be listed as approved eld. And make some way I can edit it and never be caught. You will make money. You might have to take your money to a country with no extradition though when the law eventually figures it out.

1 - Here is an example of a major truck stop chain - https://www.loves.com/ - If you go to Loves main page and search, you'll find their mobile app for smart phones and/or ELogs

2 - An ELog is like a paper log. It is a legal document and subject to the laws surrounding hours of service. I can't speak to the law because I'm not a lawyer but I'm pretty sure there are stringent rules surrounding their development, use, and distribution.
