Never take off in any gear that you can't idle out in

3rd would only work if your taking off down hill in fact you could even use 4th or 5th, for on a flat road under load your best off in 2nd or 1st .

Indeed no guts at all on ONE RPM only. It wont lug, it will not pull it will do nothing but buck and then maybe stall.

I hate that. Seems like they are building engines that wont do work across it's entire range.

There have been times I start a load facing the sky using the released trolley to buy time to get that clutch out and power added in lowest gear to get moving.

Another thing that got me sometimes with the newer trucks, And some cars. Cross the rockies in ice and snow all day long get to a customer and try to back up a TINY slope towards a dock on a thin scattered ice and watch one of the drive tires spin helplessly while the other three stay put on non ice surface.

In some ways I am happy I got out of trucking when I did. Not to be subject to the indignity of a engine that is not only neutered, but also unable to work when you require it to.

I think I would sell a first born to have a hold of a proper old engine that will get going below idle and take it all the way to the top and then lug all the way back without the BS computer limitations.

Put her in a gear she will roll off in without any throttle. Progressive shift from there to the top

When its someone elses truck, take off in higher gears becuase you guys are always in a hurry. When ou buy your own truck like myself and many others, take off in first gear empty or loaded. Why, becuase its your truck and you want to take care of it becuase you pay the ills for wear and tear. I take off in first gear and dont give 2 kwaps about who is pissed off behind me. Slow and steady and smooth shifting is how i roll
