I've been looking at a few companies and most of them don't have terminals near where I live. So how do most of these starter companies (Swift, Werner, USA) get you home? How does the process work?

I imagine they get you a load going through your area.

Do you just find some place close to park your load for a couple of days?

Or do they work it to where you are just bobtailing home? In which case, you still need to find a place to hide your truck for a couple of days?

normally they try and get you a load that drops near the house and then you deadhead( bring your empty trailer) home with you.

Now if you live near a terminal you will more than likely leave the truck and trailer there. This is a good time to have maintenance done on your truck.

Very rarely will they let you go by the house with a load on it.....too many liabilities although it does happen.

If you are otr you generally need to have some place to park your rig.

Oh and you will need to put your home time in way before you need it...ie....don't expect to be home in a two day notice to your employer......they generally want tot know 2 weeks in advance of when you want to be home...usually you'll get home within a day or two of your request....that's trucking

Generally companies you get you a load thru the house. So you need a place to park the truck and trailer. If you live close to a terminal, then leave the truck there like Rocknroll said, get the work done to the truck withou losing pay for it like you would be on the road. I leave my whole unit at a small fuel stop here in town, basically so I don't have to see the truck and won't be tempted to work on it when I'm home. when I'm home, its family time, not truck time.

Well there is a Pilot truck stop about 14 miles out from my house. I guess I could leave it there during home time. My main concern was where to leave a rig with a trailer during home time. I live on a street where you can't just pull up in one of those things. Down at the beginning of my block is a church with a huge parking lot..but there's a driver down there who's been parking his there for years. I wouldn't want to steal his 'spot'. I imagine if more drivers than him started using it, there would probably be problems arise.

I'm not one of those constantly and always thinking about home time. But I would like ot have some of these details ironed out before doing it.

well you can talk to the church or even talk to the manager of a grocery store or your local walmart etc.... some places will allow you to park but you can't hold them liable if damage ensues...etc....even if you leave your truck at a truck stop DO NOT leave anything valuable in it that would be a hardship to replace.

I've had inverters stolen before in an hour of being at a truck stop while I was showering and having dinner.....
the weirdest thing stolen though I must say was when they stole my tire pressure gauge but left my guitar......I still don't get that one:biggrin_2558:

I eventually want to move to a property more to itself and flatter. I live on a hill. I've seen a couple of drivers houses. Some people thought this crap out to detail. I saw one place where the guy had his own spot poured parallel to the street along the front of his yard, so he could just pull straight in and keep an eye on his truck. Of course, while he's home that's ALL you can see lol. But I thought it was clever.
