I'm considering applying to an LTL company once I graduate from truck driving school, and am wondering how the extra board works for a new hire. I know that you cover runs for guys that are on vacation and stuff, but if no one is on vacation are you off or working the dock?

I'm on the flex (aka extra) board at Conway and that is part of it. You'll start off at the bottom so you'll be seeing a lot of the dock for a little bit. On heavier freight days you'll go out and swap trailers or pickup volume shots at shippers. Once you gain some seniority you'll start getting the runs for guys on vacation.

Varies from company to company and even within the same company it also varies from terminal to terminal.

Where I work I'm not even part of the "extra board". I'm below them because I was hired right after the bid was done. Technically I'm a dockworker but if everyone on the extra board runs and there is an extra load I can take it. Guys on the extra board run every day sometimes double turning loads. I usually run 2-3 times a week. Any time I don't drive I either drive the yard dog or work the dock. 10-12 hour days all the time.

What companies do you have in mind?

Besides covering for vacations and call-ins, you will run any where there is an overload of freight that wont fit on reg. drivers trailers including pulling a trailer loaded with volume freight for 1-2 stops or as they put it at our place
LX loads (extra loads not covered in an area)

Those are the best ones that operate nationwide. You can also look at your regional LTLs depending on where you live.

Thanks, I'll be living in Tennessee when I get out, and the only regional LTL carrier I know of there is Averitt.

Then you can add Southeastern, AAA Cooper, R&L, Saia and Wilson to your list.
