Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes. I recently enrolled in driving school to obtain my CDL, and like most of the newbies out there have been watching and reading anything I can to get a better grasp on the industry. My title sorta says it all, and I question it now because of things like this. This is a video http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/535/ some of you may have seen, questioning our dependence on trucking, and how much trains/rail could take a larger portion of shipped goods for the better of society. I think we all have the same opinion on that one, but reading some of the comments under the video had me in awe as the ignorance of the general public. You can read them yourselves, but here is an example posted by just ONE of those people. #4 and #5 are interesting...
Thanks for the Keep on Trucking episode. You did point out some problems but were waaaaay too nice to the trucking industry. For many reasons we should put our freight back on the railroads where it belongs. Here are a few:
1. Cost-railroads are cheaper. They can carry more for the same fuel cost
2. Cost-railroads pollute a fraction of the amount per ton carried compared to trucks
3. Cost- railroads don't cost taxpayers a fortune every couple of years to fix pavement and bridges trashed by huge trucks. One truck does the damage of 15,000 cars due to the seismic stress.
4. Cost-death and damage to humans and other life is due mostly to trucks. They cause the most deadly accidents and are soooooo big they don't even notice when they force you off the roads in good weather much less in rain or blinding snow.
5. Cost-terrorism to drivers as trucks harass smaller vehicles causing drivers' blindness when roaring past in nasty weather as well as to those pulling horse trailers, etc. that truckers consider having no right to share "their" highway. Many of us are forced off roads truckers dominate by taking alternate, longer routes that are safer because of fewer trucks
6. Cost-noise pollution
How does the general public perceive truckers?

#4 and 5 are not true. That's bein nice about it.
Trucker79010 and Arkansas Frost Thank this. -
It's always the trk drivers fault for accidents even though say the 4wheeler was to blame. That 4 wheeler will cost the industry another few hundred points towards another law only for the truckers.Truck driving is the most hated carreer there is.Sure some of the trk drivers are to blame for how america perceives us.I see the way some drive. But there are far more worst 4wheelers then trk drivers. We have 2 sets of laws to follow, the ones only for the trucking industry and the one for all motorist.Laws are very unfair and the lawmakers will dig so far deep untill they enforce another law only to the trucking industry.
Arkansas Frost and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
i know, im gonna be hated for this, but most of what he says is true to a point. an accident involving a truck does have a greater capacity for injury or death, regardless of fault. and there are truck drivers out there that "own the road". there are far more that are just have little capacity to be a good driver. let's face facts...when you offer substandard wages and rely on a constant influx of "new" drivers, you are pretty much rolling the dice every day on how many of your drivers will be responsible for hurting or killing people. all the parents out there...after your kid gets his license, how comfortable will you be in his ability and DESIRE to be a good, safe driver? will you hand him the keys to your car, and let him drive 100k miles this year with no supervision, and expect him not to speed, and not have any accidents? if you do, you are a fool. and yet that is essentially what all these large companies do...take the newbie out for a couple weeks to "train" then throw him in his own truck. some succeed, others fail miserably. not to mention the highly suspect quailty of some of the trainers out there.
if you want to foster the "us vs them" mentality, keep dismissing all the arguments. "im not like that, and i know plenty of good, safe drivers". so what? the majority of truck drivers with a year or more of experience are relatively safe drivers...certainly a far greater percentage than safe car drivers. but again, so what? we work in an industry that over regulates to the point of forcing drivers out in favor of new ones. the large companies LOVE this. to them it means lower wages, and government picking up the tab on a portion of labor costs in many instances. blame the right people. the fmcsa regulations make the roads less and less safe, by making more rules and not making any regarding compensation. they can quote statistics all day, but will never convince me otherwise. im not saying the answer is necessarily less regulations, or regulated pay, or anything. i AM saying that to dismiss those that see truck drivers as "not safe" is to ignore a HUGE segment of our industry, and there simply are no easy answers to solving the problems. despite the band-aids the dot/fmcsa puts on them, the problems will always exist.chalupa, phillipc, Hitman and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'll always scoot over a little in the lane to kick up a little more spray when I get in front of a four wheeler with wipers on high and a terrified death grip on the wheel....You think the rain/snow is bad? How you likin it now?!?!?!
-
Does that make me a terrorist?

all of the earlier posts...you see? the reckless idiots ARE out there...you cant deny it. -
