I hope this doesn't turn into a situation where they spend $400M to make $300M

I don't live in Illinois, I don't much care how much they spend.

Your missing the big picture, when tolls go up the trucking companies pass on the price increase in the cost of shipping and then the price of the product being shipped goes up so you end up paying anyway when buying the stuff in the stores.

Doesn't really matter, the state will get their money either way. If they got rid of tolls they would just increase the fuel tax, or vehicle registration/licence plate cost. The government WILL get their money no matter what.

I wanted to ask him if he could route me through Chicago on non-tolls. I am still a rookie, but it does seem a bit impossible.

There are ways to get through Chicago without paying tolls. 41 from WI to Dan Ryan to 94 to 80, no tolls, lots of traffic. Time is money, so sometimes tolls are cheaper. when you are 14'0" you just use the Tri State tollway, bridges through downtown and on 41 are just over 13'6". Our outlaw owner ops who just go through the I-Pass lane and don't pay are getting hit with a 50.00 surcharge per toll. They might get away occasionaly, but it is just easier to pay as you go. 50.00 deposit gets you an I-PASS transponder at the service plaza, then you can add money on the internet site for I-PASS, It also works on all the bridges and toll roads out east as well. Only Florida and Kansas do not use the EZ Pass system. I-PASS and EZ PASS work with each other.

    Ebola Guy Thanks this.

Hi BROKEN, I hauled RR cans from Chicago to Wisconsin for 5 years. I took the tollway many times, unless it was late at night, or I was empty. The only way around the tollroad, is Hy.41.( or Hy. 45, good grief) I had SO many scary rides up and down Hy. 41, people running stoplights, coming the wrong way, or a light changing at the last second (for 1 car) and grinding to a stop, only to have it happen 3 miles down the line. Don't forget, there are 2 state scales on Hy.41, one before Hy.173 southbound, and 1 northbound in Wadsworth, I think, and while their hours are pretty predictable, I have been dragged back to a closed scale by a trooper that was watching traffic late at night. All things considered, for me, it was easier and safer to go up I-94 to the split at Hy.41 and take the tollroad (used to be 2 tolls). It's just part of driving through Chicago.
