how does training work?

when you go out with a trainer is it a set amount of hours or days that you have to train or can you be assigned a truck if the trainer feels you are ready earlier? if so does this happen often?

reason I ask is because the main reason I got into the whole driving career is because I like being alone. My last job delivering beer I didn't mind so much when I was out driving (90% of the time) but when they told me I was a helper and I had to work with someone I hated it even though it was easier. I wouldn't want to be with my best friend out on the road for 6-8 weeks nevermind with some random stranger. I am a loner I guess you can say. I don't want to be with someone for 6-8 weeks if I don't have to be.

I'm just wondering for training how long did you personally go out for until you were assigned your own truck?

2 DAYS...but that was local work, not OTR. Best of luck!

that's cool. If you don't mind me asking where did you get local work? I am looking for something local if I can find anything. It's just very hard. I'm guessing beverage/food delivery (anything with a hand truck)

I drive a transfer dump, way more fun then hauling a van around all the time. I get waaay more interesting dump sites and almost every day presents a new challenge. I Love it.

hey that's really cool. I just applied to a dump trailer position. I guess your best shot at local stuff is dump trailer and not freight because you won't be driving in the city as much? Just my guess. Maybe their insurance company allows no experience for this type of job. Please don't take me wrong I am NOT saying that your job is easy.

No worries, by all means its not the hardest position in the world, but I do get plenty of city time. One day, I will be in the mountains, or out in the country somewhere. The next, I am in Oakland, Berkeley, or (shutter) Sand Francisco....every day is new, no pre-determined routes.

All companies as far as over the road training are different. Usually the average training time you can expect to ride with a trainer is 4-6 weeks. It goes by quick though. Trust me, once you get out there with your trainer you will be glad you went with one. Especially this time of year. There is a lot more to it then just holding the steering wheel.
