My cell provider has been bought out by AT&T and my contract is nearing its end. How is their coverage and more importantly how is their customer service? Not that i have a lot of options, Verizon is only other provider in my state. Had them and was ready to throw phone out window everyday.
how good is AT&T

It's going to be bumpy for the first year.
AT&T has a nasty habit of coming into an area, and really hosing things up while they make updates, changes, etc etc.
I've used Cingular for years. AT&T took that part, and actually made it better in some areas of service. And screwed it up in others.
Coverage is fairly good throughout most of the country. AT&T isn't investing as much in rural areas as I would like to see. But, they are working on it.
I am glad to see them making a move for VT though. Getting a signal there, was like pulling teeth. They have a nasty habit of NOT finding a signal, if it isn't their tower, or one they have a reciprocal agreement with.wyldhogg Thanks this. -
I had verizon as well. I got tired of messing with them and went to cingular. Since AT&T took over seems like it is not as good. I drop more calls with them than cingular. One thing nice that verizon did not have was rollover minutes. Teenager at home, plus wife is always yacking to one of her friends.

I have had AT&T since they bought Cingular. I have pretty good luck with the phone. I have only had the internet card a week, but the wife is driving right now, and we're on the interstate, and I'm not having any problems surfing. I don't do gaming, so I don't know how it would work with that.
As has been mentioned, some areas the coverage is better than others, but overall, I have rarely been somewhere where it just flat did not work. Even up in Montana (I'm from Mississippi) AT&T was fine.wyldhogg Thanks this. -
I was with cingular then AT&T it was a seamless transition....never had to hold longer than a few min for a customer service rep.. I was always treated with respect and was pleased with my service...the best thing is all of AT&T reps are in the USA and they speak fluent ENGLISH...I would highly recommend AT&T.

For phones, they are fantastic. I have been a customer for years, and I've never had a problem. My phone works in a lot of places I've been where no one else's doesn't. For internet cards, they STINK. They have the worst 3g network, period. To the guy that got one last week, I hope you don't watch too much youtube, because there is a 5 gig limit. They don't stand out because of the limit, all the carriers have the 5 gig limit, but AT&T spanks you HARD if you go over it. I was just at their customer forums reading stories from people who got $5000 air card bills for Christmas this year from AT&T. The first 5 gigs costs you $60, the 6th one and every one after will run you $500 a gig. That's just wrong. No, it's just evil.
Bottom line, if you are in the market for a phone, they are a great company. If you are looking for a data card for your laptop, look elsewhere.wyldhogg Thanks this. -

Rate Plan Details
Included Data 5 GB
Additional data $0.00048/KB
Canadian Data $0.015/KB
International Data $0.0195/KB
Let's do the math:
1024(KB) = 1MB
1024(MB) = 1GB
Cost per KB: $0.00048
1024 * 1024 * .00048 = $503.31

On 12/3/08, I upgraded my internet service from a cable modem to the new AT&T Mercury USB "aircard" and went totally wireless on my laptop, wherever I went. It was supposed to cost about $66 per month. On 12/15/08, I got a bill for $732. Be cautious if you get the internet plan as the customer service reps don't seem to know much about it and they gave me some bad advice. At the time I questioned him about the 5 gig per month limit as it seemed small to me, but it's the biggest package they offer. My Rep assured me 5 gig is actually a lot and that I shouldn't worry about running over it.
5 gigs may be a lot for a PDA or a smart phone, but it's not very much for internet usage when it is your only connection to the internet. When I complained and took the device back to AT&T, they said "oh, you must be a gamer". No I'm not a gamer. I'm a 67 year old man and this is a heck of a Christmas present from AT&T as even though I took back the aircard back and cancelled that account, I still owe the $732.

I purchased an air card in September and while I didn't "abuse" it, I did use it quite a lot doing a lot of family research and other stuff. When I purchased the card I was told it was unlimited for $60 a month. I even called back after I got the card up and running just to make sure. Was told again that it was unlimited. Yeah, well, first two lies from AT&T reps. Still trying to get situation straightened out. They seem to think I can cough up $6200 to pay their bill after being lied to. Heck I wouldn't have gotten the card and the plan if I had known it was only a 5 gig plan. I've been talked to 5 different reps and two supervisors over the past 2 months. Finally was told this past Tuesday that my claim for refund had been denied and I was to pay the bill in entirety or lose my phone service. I told the rep that wasn't going to happen and she needed to refile the claim. The really stupid thing is the notes on my account clearly show where I called and was told that it was unlimited. I realize that changes were taking place around that time so I figure I got caught in the changeover. Apparently somebody, somewhere at AT&T wants me to pay them a nice bonus. Anybody had any success in fighting a ridiculous bill? I guess my next step is to call my attorney and let him handle it. Oh, and the other would be to go find a new phone service.

I can top that. My bill for the first month is $2,278.70 over the $110 start up cost. I was assured at Best Buy when I bought this as long as I was not roaming a Aircard with 5mb was more than enough. After multiple phone callls to ATT they will "reveiw my bill" and get back to me in a few weeks! Beware that was about $2400 for ONE MONTH. To top it off when I tried to access my bill online You cant without a password sent to your wireless device,A AIRCARD HAS NO PROVISION TO RECEIVE A TEXT!! Once again tech suppot cant help other than send a password via US Mail. Yes that is their solution. Needless to say the card is shut off and I will be waiting by the mailbox for my password so I can see what went wrong.

This is what AT&T is doing to their new customers. Sorry, they get no endorsement from me! -
Just wanna thank all for your input. Hopefully AT&T does wellup here. Truck it up!

I've had Cingular, which is now AT&T for about 7-8 years. Overall, I'm happy with the service. The biggest thing I like about them is the plan to rollover minutes. Some months I barely use the phone and then some months I burn up those minutes. I had the wireless card for a long time and I got coverage just about everywhere. I only encountered a few dead spots but that was because I was in the middle of no where.
