Dreams of hitting it big in the oil fields huh? Good luck to ya. It will probably be a very tough challenge. Not saying it isn't possible, just going to take a lot of foot work and a lot of rejection. Might be easier to get in during the winter months when nobody wants to be there. Might be better off in Texas. I have read multiple threads of guys going to Texas and knocking on doors with decent success. Nd in winter out in the patch is brutal.

better do some research, and get the dollar signs out of your eyes first.

TLeaHeart, Why do you say get the dollar signs out of my eyes? Seems like a lot of people do make pretty good money out there. Isn't money the reason people go out there anyway? Just a little confused on that part

i think i would advise not starting as a new cdl holder in the winter time in nd. some of our roads can be a challange to drive as a experianced driver when there is no snow and ice on them. and theres times in the winter you gotta have the seat cushion removed from your rear by the time you make it into where your going. winter time on nd oil feild roads is not the place to have to be thinking about how to shift gears or drive the truck.

probably. There are a lot of companies in ND looking for drivers right now. You can make as much money doing oilfield driving in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. ND is glamorous (in oilfield ideology) but right now you don't have to be there to make money. Beautiful country though. good luck

It's crazy. I'd have loved to have learned of these kinds of opportunites 25 years ago. I've been in the oilfields since January and the problem I'm facing is choosing the best way to gross 100 grand per year, and maybe then some. Right now I'm looking at buying a tractor a guy is selling for 18k. At least here in the warm months these guys are having no trouble taking home 5k per week (after fuel, plates, insurance) out of which must come truck payment, repairs and taxes.

If you can't get a CDL job right away, there seems to be plenty of oilfield support work, some of which might be an even better career path. Sage advice about staying away from the snow your first year of driving (and, every year after that...) IMO. But, I am in ND right now.
