TLDR:How long before werner and other carriers will let you take on a dedicated account? Is there always opening or is it hard to get in?

My current plan for when I enter the trucking workforce is to go to a mega carrier have them pay for my CDL if I cant get a loan (650+ fico so i should be fine) then get on a dedicated account ASAP ,get my year and a half in and move to a higher paying dedicated account with a reputable company

Depends on where your located. Some are hurting for people, some have too many people. If you call the recruiters they'll say your guaranteed a spot, but when you finish training they'll say it's full. You never know.

And you think Werner and Dollar Store is this???? :biggrin_2556:

Get your CDL and 1 yr experience and do a little more research while you're doing it, oh, and set your bar higher. You will have plenty on your hands going through training and getting through that first year. Good luck and keep an eye on your local truck stops to see who works in that area.

@dryver:I'm saying I wanna get my year in at Werner driving and unloading so I can leave them and go to a better company

There's always a ad in my area for a company that pays 44cpm 150 unload/load and $20 per stop but they want two years Otr exp.

if they are running an ad for it they are either not great to work for or theres a catch somewhere. Good jobs are hard to come by if they are truly great

That dollar store account ain't nothing to wish for or seek out IMHO. Most of those stores lack docks and have parking lots which were not designed for 53' boxes pulled by condos. Its tricky driving for seasoned pros. Doing it when you're green is stacking the odds against yourself as far as having an incident on your record goes.

My advice is to skip the mega carriers all together. Get a loan, get your license and knock on the door of every small company you can find until one of them says yes.

Thats true ,but when you know no one in the trucking field because its a "dirty losers job",its hard to actually find those jobs.

It's also not like I can make alot of trucker friends out on the road when I do start trucking

How hard is it to get into the Dollar General account? Are you upright, and breathing? Do you have a CDL? Or at least a facsimile CDL retrieved from a Cracker Jack box? If you answered yes to two out of three of these questions then Congratulations Driver, you qualify for the glamorous lifestyle of a Werner Enterprises Dollar General Dedicated Account Driver! Try not to cripple yourself in the first two weeks, they hate that.
