For you carriers out there—how important is it that a prospective new broker have a low MC number when he calls you for the first time. I know you'll check his credit as well, but does a low MC make you feel more secure about payment and the quality of the whole process.

The broker I’d like to work under has been in biz about 5 years, great credit and the MC number is low 7’s.

But is an MC number starting with a 7 considered a red flag at all?

I don't give it much thought. I also don't let the account get very high before moving another load for a new broker. Pay me fast and I'll haul for you again. If we get to doing lots of business, as long as the money keeps flowing on a steady basis its all good. If you write me a check every 15 days I'm happy.

Lady K and RB Cunningham Thank this.
  4. I agree with @gokiddogo if the broker keeps up with timely payments that he owes you. I wouldn't see an issue.

The brokers who string you along and don't pay. I would care less if he had a 3 digit MC #

Post his MC number. I'll look them up and tell you what their credit rating is and track record

    Thanks, Skate:

I've already looked into him. I was just wondering in general. I've heard carriers say they won't haul for brokers with certain MC numbers, especially 8.

I wanted to make sure that when I start working under a broker that his MC number wouldn't be a obstacle to finding trucks.

Oh, ok. I'm an independent carrier and I use the Internet Truckstop. If they have no credit rating, refuse to give their credit history or have a credit rating lower then "A" I don't book a load with them. I also have access to D&S Factoring which does extensive credit checking on a broker. If they say no, so do I.

I could personally care less about their mc number, credit rating is what's important, just make sure to get their credit rating and if it's good, haul for them, if it's a bad credit rating, tell them money first then I haul the load.

The MC number is of no importance. Don't judge a book by it's cover. For instance MAP 21 guidines forced Diamond Transportation System, Inc. to separate their brokerage and freight forwarding from their trucking operations (a MC number for each function, that is) and their MC number is 827940. A new surety bond was placed under this MC and they are approved with all factoring companies. They have a stellar credit rating.

Here's my opinion: Have a system in place, kick the wheels often and kick them hard to avoid being screwed over. Good research on every company proves to be invalueable.

As a carrier, a broker who has a MC# that starts with a 6 or lower and has not had their authority revoked makes me feel safe. Our broker MC# starts with a 1, and has never been revoked, bond never been in jeopardy, and in over 30 yrs we have paid low six figures worth of freight bills that we did not get paid on. There is one particular factoring company who will not factor our loads due to our policy of not accepting a phone call as proof of assignment, but when carriers who use this factoring company call on a load, they're calling because that MC starts with a '1' and they have the sort of faith that used to be the much more important of the two "bonds" between a broker and carrier.
