I had an accident at the truck stop in Clayton IN. I was waiting behind somebody who was waiting for a trucker to back into his spot. Finally the line moves. I put it in gear and move up. I look over to my passenger side and spot a perfectly good empty spot. I tweak it left a bit to milk some space and then proceed to make a U-turn in the parking lot. I was keeping an eye on the red dot and on my hood the whole time. All I could see in my mirror was trailer. I jack it up a tiny bit to make sure my nose clears and try to complete the turn. CRUNCH! Where the hell did THAT come from? Apparently the guy behind me thought it would've been a good idea to sneak past me while I was making the turn. After I finish, a guy comes up to me and said my trailer swing just crumpled the ladder on his tanker trailer. I called safety earlier and they said I had been charged with a preventable. WTF? :biggrin_25516:

Of course that's preventable. You didn't have to get out of bed that day.

Well even though I am not a truck driver this sounds preventable based on your story and other people providing feed back.

It sucks but it is up to you to see the idiots trying to sneak by you.. I can't tell you how many times I have had people run behind me while I was backing into a spot.

It really sucks but yes it's preventable. As ANY driver knows you are responsible for your truck as well as everybody elses too. I bet they called it unassured clear distance. It sucks but I would bet that over half the drivers in here have been there.:biggrin_25513:

Safety probably figures you should have GOALed it before backing up.

I didn't back up. I jacked it up so that my nose could clear the trucks on my driver side but I could still see the indicator dot. Who knows how long that guy had been trying to pass down my backside when he could see I was making a turn around? But whatever. Because of that I now drive like I'm taxing a 747(not that I was ever a pilot).

Just curious,"TruckerMario" how hard did you have your rig jacked? It is possible if you jack it too hard the trailer will inadvertinly go backwards as you are going forward. One way to avoid this in the future is don't jack it soo hard, but if you have to just pull down on the "Hand Valve" and this will keep your trailer in the same spot. I hope I explained this so you can see what I'm sayin. I also hope this sheds some lite on your situation on how this could happen, and helps you out.:biggrin_2554:
