How inevitable are driver-unfriendly loads at a typical dry van company?

    any driver worth his "salt" can back in a 53 footer, where any other trailer went into.

    it comes down to looking at the situation, sizing it up, backing, getting out and looking.

    true, and personally many of us never had a problem, and some have. ultimately, who's at fault for that?

    but when it comes to "bad loads", so what? do the dang load, shut up, and move onto the next load, after that.

    so simple, even a caveman can do it.

    The customer lies to the broker or the broker hides what he knows about THAT customer. Or, it could be that customer's location is too perfect and helps to get the truck to other freight

    Recruiting ad; We pay drivers $50/hr Detention.

    Reality 1: Appt window is from 0001 to 2359. Driver must wait until end of window, THEN give 2 free waiting hours, and driver must hope this customer's contract doesn't prohibit detention charges.

    Reality 2: Dispatcher assigns Drop 1 in L.A., Stop 2 in Demver, Stop 3 in Anaheim 30 minutes after Denver and deny you Detention because you are late.

    Bos "we're all on the same team. My part of the team is paid $1800 for that load, I work banker's hours, I have weekends & holidays off, and sleep at home. You're part of the team that gets paid $250 for that load, has to wait 9 hours to unload, get to crap in a porta-potty, and goes home 4 times a year."

    One of my favorite jobs was doing the USPS run for AJR Trucking, You have to load and unload a 53' trailer 3 times per night. ( i was working as a temp driver at the time), Out of all the drivers I have worked with these USOS Contractor's can back a trailer, at first I would look at the dock and think I cant get in there then one of these guys would pull out his shoe horns and put it in there, So your actually bumping a dock at least 6 times a night. Very fast moving load in 15 minutes average Your backed in and you unload and reload the trailer, get your bol and your off.

    So many trucks, so many shippers, so many receivers, so many highways out there. And it's all supposed to be perfect ? I guess your instructor at truck driving school forgot to tell you about the %#@$ loads and not always perfect weather to deal with and those nasty crybaby runs to NYC ? Right ? That's terrible the driver had to lump some freight instead of climbing in his sleeper and playing x-box games. Oh well, new decade, new year, driverless trucks coming soon.... no need to worry....not too many driving jobs to be had. Gawd, I'm getting crusty in my old age !

    I had a shipper that loaded me to 82,000 gross.

    I took my scale ticket back and they refused to rework the load because they didn’t have the “authority” to modify the customers order.

    I called my company and it took until the next day for various threats to convince them to rework the load.

    I would call that shipper unfriendly.
