I'll be in school at my local CC from mid-January to mid-April. I'd like to hit the ground running right after graduation. How long before graduation should I start contacting the usual suspects that'll hire inexperienced newbies? And should I expect recruiters to show up at the school?
How Long Before Graduation Should I Apply?

Good questions. I'm starting CC Jan 4 and done mid March. Are you down around Cortez BD?

I am not really sure. The most they would give you is a pre-hire. Which is meaningless.
You cannot actually apply till you have a class A CDL.
Company's pull drivers driving records and do a basic look over on prior employment before they bring them to orientation.
They do not do the full background check and everything before. They will say that they do, but they do not do anything that will cost them money before you are at the orientation location.
This is why so many drivers are let go while at orientation. Things come out in background, and for experienced drivers they will pull the psp and other info.xlsdraw, rocknroll nik and Rerun8963 Thank this. -

I spent the night in Cortez about 5 years back when we were exploring the Rockies. That first time thru Silverton was a real test of the lungs for a Sea Level boy like me. Ended up buying a place in Montana.

I expect when I can get in a truck, I'll get up that way...I hope!
The Cortez area of Four Corners is really nice...Mesa Verde and the San Juans spread all around, the La Sals and the Abajos in Utah, big canyons all over.
It's a tough place to find any kind of work at all though, and trucking seems to be one of the better deals going, so here I am! -
I applied a couple of weeks before graduation. Instructor said it would be a good idea, just to get my name out there. I got a few pre-hires and talked with recruiters, just to get info about their company. Its good to have options.

BarnDog Thanks this. -
Thanks for the replies! I guess I'll see how it goes, and plan to start making some calls not too long before I expect to get my license.

The school im currently attending, requires you to submit 4 applications as part of the curriculum. Then they do all the faxing of them and other clerical things for you.
