It should not take more than 5 days unless they are having a problem getting parts. With a Cummins parts should not be an issue.

Cat did my 3406E in 4 days

We do one in about 3 days.

Rinky dink?
I avoid dealerships and factory shops like the plague because they usually do mediocre work for premium prices and seem to be incapable of thinking outside the box!
Independent shops are not necessarily "rinky-dink" just as the so-called authorized shops are not necessarily worth a ####.
I have an independent shop that I go to in Grand Junction, CO. that is one of the best shops that I have ever used and I will go out of my way to go there if it's at all possible because I know that when the job is done, It's done right the first time and I won't be sitting on the side of the road like I have in the past with many other shops including dealerships and other "authorized" shops.
Now...Having said all of that, 5 weeks is way too long for an engine rebuild regardless of whether it's an inframe or an out of frame.puncher Thanks this. -
Out of frame overhaul in 5,4 or 3 days? Seriously? 2 days just to R&R engine. 40 hours min to rebuild. Unless you are working 16 hours a day, count at least 7 days. Any kind of major block machining will count for some the excessive time. Line boring, cutting blocks for liners and what ever do take time. Are they taking it down to bare block, new cam, retime cam followers? What all are they doing?

my inframe took 7 day's, if I had a out of frame done & the shop called & told me it was ready in 3-4 day's THAT would worry me.
-
The shop I use has an onsite machine shop and can do it all right there...I've seen him turn out a reman engine in 7 days start to finish and I would have no problem with that time frame knowing the quality of the work that he puts out.
