Idle time on a truck averages 20 hours per year. This is for normal use and not running it to keep heat or AC in the cab. Generally a high idle when you start the truck in the morning, and a low idle when you shut it down.
How long does a truck have to idle?

He was talking about his turbo, I would assume.
I really do not like to idle my truck, but if it is above 80 degrees or below 30 I have no choice.
I think that the best thing that could happen to get more company's to use APU's is for the idle regs to change to say that the "Owner of the truck" must pay any idle ticket, if the truck is not equipped with an APU.
This way they will not be forcing anyone to buy one, but it will make the company's responsible for the health and wellness of the driver.
Right now it is 100% on the driver, and drivers are dieing out on the road due to heat and cold.
It is also probably the biggest reason that driver drive while tired. You cannot sleep of the temps do not allow it and the truck will not run. -
With more and more places now having anti-idling laws, an owner-operators choices in hot or cold weather are a)freeze/broil b)run the truck anyway, hoping you don't get a ticket c)IdleAire where available d)bite the bullet and buy an APU.
The province of Ontario up here in Canada recently passed anti-idling legislation with no exceptions... pretty retarded when you consider that temperatures in the summer get into the 90s, and down to -30s in the winter.
My current truck is an International 9900i and has room on the frame rail to mount an APU, but I don't know if I'm going to keep it for much longer. If I trade for a 379 Pete or similar long hood, it's nearly impossible to mount one when the truck is limited to 244 inch wheelbase.
I think for APUs to become standard, they first need to become more reliable, less expensive, and more compact.Ducks and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -
The current trend in major APU's is a diesel generator.
Several company's are working with battery types of APU's, but those do not keep the engine warm in winter conditions and are very heavy.
I think it will be quite a few years before an affordable and fairly light battery APU is available.
The technology is finally becoming available but the battery's are way too expensive a the moment for the lightest/ smallest types. You would be looking at 2x the price of what is on the market right now, and they would not last more than a few years. -
if im going to be stopped for more then 5min, then the truck stops.. unless im at traffic lights, traffic in general, and pulled over by VICroad to weigh my truck
(Yes i have been tempted to kep diving when they try and weight my truck)

[Minimum five minutes before you shut her off in extreme heat 10 minutes...............
will save the engine in the long run............frogman
old-six-pack Thanks this. -
If you compare loss of revue adding in the cost of the APU, plus your still feeding it, Bad investments.
This is a load of crap that its a good idea, there noisy, they are still burning fuel, and worst of all to our industry (bulk) there way to dam heavy.
If its a comfortable temp I'll shut my engine off. There rest is too dam bad, if the company wants me to shut down and its hot or cold they can provide a room.Injun and old-six-pack Thank this. -
My truck stays running all day monday through friday from 7 am till quiting time usually around 5 or 6 pm. Now I run a concrete mixer so it pretty much will stay running all day long unless I wash out and take a lunch, we put a lot of hours on our trucks especially when we're busy. But when I ran otr and would be parking for the night and just came off the interstate I would let it idle for about 4 or 5 minutes to cool the turbo down.

So to comply with the law 100% you're pretty much forced to use an apu.Last edited: Aug 7, 2010
