I've been checking out companies since the first week of school, in order to avoid companies with bad safety records and/or really poor pay. Talked with lots of people about companies. After I got my CDL, I visited about 15 companies and have applied at 4 of those companies.
How long does it normally take for companies to get back to driver applicants? For those where I first went in and spoke with their safety directors, I then filled out their online applications, and followed up with an e-mail to the person I spoke with letting them know I'm in their system. Should I follow up with a phone call after a week of waiting? How long does it normally take companies to do their background checks before they can decide to hire someone?

How long is a chinese name ? It varies is the answer to the chinese name and your question.

Usually less than a week. Might have to take a good long look at the Man in the Mirror if no one is responding.

Hope you don't scowl like in your pic when you do a face-to-face LOL. My son got a few calls within hours of submitting online apps. One company waited a few weeks. I'd say carpet-bomb online apps to OK companies hoping the right ones call back. And follow up within a week to make sure they got your app. If someone doesn't hire you, ask why nicely.

I tended to fill out apps late at night. So many times I'd fill out an app 12-2am and get a wake up call at 6am a few hours later. Other times it took from 2-3 days to a whole week.

Most companies that hire new drivers will have bad safety records and low pay. They have bad safety records because they hire new drivers. As a newbie you are going to make mistakes. You are going to hit things. You are going to become over confident in your new abilities too soon. You are going to make a right hand turn and run your tire over a curve more then once. You will be lucky if you do not blow a tire doing so. That is just the way things are. You might be lucky and get through your first month or so but by the time you are there 3 months you will have done something wrong. Trust me.
That is also why they do not pay as much as other companies. You will cost the company more in maintenance then some one with 20 years experience. You will grin a gear or two. No big deal. Do not come into trucking with an attitude. You have not paid your dues. You will have to. The company will have to give you an opportunity before you have earned it.
We want you to succeed. But so far all you have done is pass a test.
As to the length of time it takes. I was one of the few that did not get hired before I got out of school. A felon on parole was not the top of the recruiters to do list. So, it took me a while to find a job. It took me almost a week. Now it only takes a couple of hours. Truck drivers are needed. Newbies are not really truck drivers yet. But you will be. Welcome to trucking and good luck. -
You need to apply at 10 companies at least. Many aren't that organized, most get boo-coo apps daily. Most have $7 an hour grunts doing the initial pre-qualifying. Some even have the same grunts making hiring decisions ! Just from your application. You should hear something in 3-5 days.

It depends how much fact and how much fiction you put on the apps.

First company took 15 minutes. Current company, I had to wait overnight.
Both times I was booked for orientation and given bus info on the first phone call. -
