Don't buy a truck that is too old or you will end up putting more money into it than it is worth just trying to keep it on the road.
-
How old is too old?
-
well if you buy older than a 04 you should be getting close to 1 mpg better than a 04 and newer, so at 150k miles/yr with the older truck getting 6.5 mpg and a newer truck getting 5.5 you would have at $2.39/gal almost $10000/yr to put toward extra maintence on the older truck. These figures were from a friend how told me the difference between his 01 and his 05 specd the same doing the same or easier job with the newer truck. Others have told me they lost 1/2mpg with an 07 compared to 01 and 03 trucks, so thats still $5000/yr
tdb, Desiredname and PharmPhail Thank this. -
we have some old Whites for sale - cheap!!!
2.9-4 million miles - most on second or third engine block.
air start - air wipers and manual steering
some are twin sticks - most have 9 speeds...

What's it cost to replace an engine block on these guys?
Had a car done for about $800. Can't imagine what it's like on these. -
in frames run between 9000 - 15,000 usd depending on make and if you can reuse your injectors / turbo...
BLOCKS usually come as a complete assembly (rotating assembly included) for about 18,000 - 23,000 usd.
a block by itself can cost between 3500 and 5000 usd. -
the point I was trying to make was that these trucks are so old - that after their 3rd in frame they needed to have NEW BLOCKS - and have had so at least TWICE!!!
heheheh
(nothing like running a truck older than you are) -
Well at those prices, there don't appear to be any bragging rights to how long it has "lasted". Seems a fair tossup to just replacing them each time. You can get a great newer truck for 20k. Must be a sentimental thing.

My truck is a 93, I've had for 10-11 years. I just keep replacing what breaks. The cost for all my repairs are a fraction of what you'd pay a year in truck payments. I do 95% of the work on the truck.
One thing to keep in mind, these companies that want you to have a truck less than 5 years old, are most likely companies you don't want to work for anyway! Their idea is to keep you in a high payment so they can force you to do what they want, or don't work!latanea Thanks this.
