I read a book ,written by 'Professional tourist',who packed his stuff in the storage(car as well) and left for one year!! -
Guess that depends how much you like the wife!! just kidding.
Unfortunatly in this day and age most companies consider an OTR driver as someone who gets home every 14 days or thereabouts. Regional drivers once a week. And they usually only let you stay home long enough to get your 36hour restart.
Some companies doen't even live up to these meager terms and of course you can choose to stay out as long as you wish. -
That all depends and could be as long as they want it to be.

I'd like to chime in..although I have no family and no need for hometime, I worked from April 2006 to January 2007 and drove almost 90,000 miles. Shaffer Trucking is generous with hometime for reefer drivers at 1.5 days for every 6 days worked. I'd rather work than take hometime. Shaffer let me work as much as I wanted and just kept giving me load after load.

My other 1/2 worked for a company that kept him out for 3-4 weeks at a time then gave him 3-4 days off. This company he's with now, he leaves on Friday if he goes west and Saturday if he goes east then he's out till his trailer is empty (LTL outbound) then he comes back to Indiana till Friday or Saturday. Typically he's out 2-3 weeks at a time depending on which direction he goes in and how many stops he has on his trailer.
