it really seems to me the best place to ask is Texas DMV - they probably have a web site

Most dump trucks here are a tractor/trailer 5-axle setup. I can't remember seeing any tri-axle dumps, just tandem. I've seen tandem-axle pups pulled behind dumps as well. I don't know the laws on the number of axles. Most aggregate haulers permit their trucks for 84,000 lbs on state highways. Interstates are still 80,000 lbs.
My info is a bit dated, so definitely check on it yourself. Just passing on what I've observed on the road, and some stuff I heard years ago. -
I know alot of people who were storming after katrina, they had no issues with running 11 axle log trucks down there.

I know they run truck and trailers there because we sent one of our new trucks to be in the movies. You remember George Strait in "Pure Country"? That was our truck when he got a ride and lost his boots to the driver. Some may not know what a truck and trailer is so it's a power unit that also hauls cargo and then you hook a trailer to the truck. Some may think they are doubles but they're not. You back them like a car because they pivot in two places and you won't see them in the east. The number of axles you'd have to call but when I pulled extra axles the states didn't care as long as I didn't go over size and weight without a permit. But you should still call.
