Yes, most instructors will let you do this. You better be very sure you did the first side well enough though because if you do this, whatever you missed on the first side just doubled your points toward failure.

I didn't even get any instruction on the pre trip, just a list of things to be checked, I carried that thing everywhere with me. I almost wore that thing out but I passed the first time, like most things involving getting your CDL it isn't what you know but can you do it according to the manual.

When I was at DPS, the majority of people tested didn't pass the pretrip and you had to pass that to do the hacking and road skills tests. 1 and done.

Enough people fail it that even the megas actually teach you it, unlike backing and shifting.... And driving for that matter.

    Don't sweat it.

Not quite, what you want to do is,
    A. Name the Part. They want to know that you know what exactly you are talking about.
    Ex: Alternator.
    B. Tell them it’s mounted securely. Is it welded to a mount or the frame of the tractor? Are there any nuts and bolts etc.
Ex: Alternator is mounted securely, nuts and bolts are present and tight.
    C. Make sure you tell them it’s not damaged. You’re looking for BCDM. BROKE, CRACKED, DENTED, MISSING. That’s what you would say on cold metals.
Ex: Alternator is not Broke, cracked, dented or missing.
    D. In special occasions, such as the engine bay, you want to tell the examiner, if the part is either belt driven or gear driven.
Ex. The alternator and the water pump are the only thing belt driven.
It’s quite a bit to try and remember. Just make sure the examiner knows that you know EXACTLY what your looking at and for. Hopefully you don’t get the entire truck and trailer like I did. And STUDY! Do not sleep on the Pretrip! I don’t care if you have been driving from the womb, if you don’t pass your Pretrip, you don’t touch the backing portion. Hope this helps.
