:smt017 I bumped into an old friend yeaterday, a fella who I helped get his CDL some 15 years ago. He drove for several OTR companies, then worked in the safety department of a small regional outfit. Finally he became a CDL instructor at a well known private school. Been there about 7 or 8 years.
When I asked about how the school was going , he said he was teaching more heavy equipment classes than trucking . Too hard for some people to get the money for classes. Financing companies have tighter requirements now.:smt115
The potential students are getting lower and lower in basic abilities, and most have no business getting behind the wheel of a big truck, he added.
When I asked him what percentage made it as a profesional driver, the answer was QUOTE: " OUR RECORDS SHOW LESS THAN 10% ARE STILL DRIVING AFTER THE FIRST TWO YEARS".His reasoning was most wannabes have no idea what they are getting into.:smt102
How many keep trucking ?

i predict their will be a serious need for truck drivers in the coming years. the cdl mills will be closed down with the csa. just my opinion but what do i know i just drive local.

Yup Yup I agree. Most think how hard can it be to just drive? Well lot more than just driving to this job. Some of the student I went to school with did not even last the six weeks with the mentor.

They must be the ones that drive slow on the PASSING lane pulling a hill. Been running to those quite more often lately.

Wow, that is amazing. I often wonder what percent of drivers on the road at any given time have over 1 year experience. I've always guessed 'less than 50%', but I think I will need to 're-think this one.
Maybe only 25% of the truck drivers on the road now, have 1 yr. or more experience??? Anyone know of a link with statistics that would have this? thx in advance. -
I was told that if you can make it at least 6 months doing OTR (with home time, of course) then you're cut out for this. Some people don't even make it a month before quitting because they're just not cut out for it.

It's a good thing 90% of them are gone, within 2 years.....
Otherwise all the noobies wouldn't get their chance at a new career !!!! -
