Was loading today next to a guy who had his own authority. Asked him how long he had his own authority and he said 2 years. Asked who he drove for before he got his own authority and he explained that he got his cdl and immediately got his own authority. Dude got his cdl and filed his papers. Said 2 years in his insurance is like 2000 a month but apparently is going down at the end of this fiscal year.

when I looked into getting my own authority, I #### near fainted when they told me what my insurance rate would be after 3 years of running LTL loads between Ft Worth and Los Angeles in an 80mph truck. Gotta wait another year or two for that stuff to disappear. Insurance company wanted it ALL up front lol.

pro tip: Arizona DOT actually look at your ELD and know wtf they are looking for. Don’t get cute or creative. And California DOT will enforce that left lane and 55mph all the way to the other side of that bridge into Arizona. They love repeat customers too, so they will gladly knock that 80 in a 55 down to 8mph over so you can keep your job and your license long enough to do it a few more times

They had 60 trucks. They had about 15 drivers because they couldn’t hire or keep drivers hauling spot freight. The only way for them to hit the rate per mile they absolutely had to hit would be to take loads that were 100-400 miles at most and into NYC or something like that. And then you’d be stuck there because they couldn’t hit that rate coming back out. Now imagine being paid a flat rate per mile, but only loaded and having them constantly try to claim none of the brokers are paying detention when I know that you can file against the brokers bond to enforce the rate con.

they were desperate to stay in business at all costs and they had to start selling equipment to stay in business because they had already sold all their drivers.

it’s a terrible model normally but right now is suicidal.
