How many miles do you run before you change your oil?

Well, if you had been following all along and actually read what I wrote, I stated that it would be the best starting point to do oil changes, and then it can be adjusted as the oil samples suggest. Oh, but oh no, you didn't take the time to read those posts. You just assume that I stated that the OEM recommended drain interval is written in stone and must be adhered to like it was some sort of government regulation. I still stand by the comment that the OEM recommended oil change is a good starting point, but that since each motor and how it is used is different, adjust the drain interval accordingly.

And that 3.5% soot level, what is the allowable soot level as prescribed by Cummins? Did you bother to research thru the Cummins Lubrication Manual to find what the limits are for wear metals and soot? Probably not. I have no clue what the allowable soot level is for the ISX, but I would sure be looking. With any motor I have, I also download and have readily available the lubrication manual from the OEM on my laptop and can look up anything I am unsure of. They are free downloads.

I would also suggest that if a bypass filter is used and one is getting 3.5% soot, they might consider getting another bypass filter, because that one sure isn't doing a very good job.

one truck oo and run a Detroit with 700k miles. i change every 10 k miles, and that includes fuel and water filter...
i also grease it every 2-4k miles. but thats cause i used to work in the oil field. so it was very dusty there.
    i burn a gallon every 10k miles.
run rotella only since i had the truck. got it used from a produce company who would write you up if maintenance logs weren't done right :)

I ordered my first oil kit from blackstone labs. when I first got my truck it got oil changed, filters & greased every 10,000 never needed greasing before. just by the few pumps it took to see old grease come out. I just started this month to try to go to 12,000 on oil changes. yeah it's just ole habit. I just do not trust mfrs recommendations.

it was on a truck forum where a co brought in a cummins problem to the dealer cause of a major engine failure at 550,000 miles. was told YOU got your money out of that engine, warranty is over. I guess they felt if the truck had over 500,000 miles that it made at least $500,000 in revenue & that should be good enough. engine mfr like to sell parts & new trucks. if every truck lasted over a mil miles mfr would loose money.
I do understand the oil analyzing & see if YOUR truck needs servicing at a certain point. I think it's more important to catch a problem before it comes one.
